The salmon live most of their lives in the big lake then come to spawn in rivers.

you may not realize this but the salmon in the river are there to spawn and die and then quickly decay and provide nutrients to their offspring....when they are in the river their flesh is decaying rapidly...their cells are no longer taking on nutrients...their cells are dying....if you choose to eat the fish it will not taste as it should and its texture will be wrong.
salmon absorb mercury in their fat tissue...ie their bellies...they are the top of the foodchain...children and pregnant women can not eat salmon from lake ontario...especially ones from the rivers spawning
go to the ontario tourism store at dundas and yonge (atrium) see the fishing section...guide to eating ontario sport fish...pick one up

I agree with some of the posters above, salmonids contain the highest mercury levels.
