On Sunday I went out and fished the north shore of Hamilton Harbour. I used grits for packbait. The guys south of the border all say it is an incredible bait for carp . I believe them. It took about an hr to get the fish going but then the action was pretty steady all afternoon long . I managed three fish in the twenties and with the last cast using the last bit of grits packbait I hooked into this guy. At 38&1/2 lbs it came close to my PB. What a beast.

Hey hammercarp,
I tried to send you an inbox but I got an error that you cant receive messages...so heres wat i was inquiring:
Ive been out to my local stream a couple times recently chasing carp but have had troubles hooking them. I just use the same set up I do for steelhead, centerpin, float shot swivel fluro size 10 hook. Put my 3 pieces of corn on, make sure the depth is deep so the corn lays on the bottom, my float always bounces lifts and stuff but I can never time it right.... unless the carp already swallowed it whole and swims away with it

Any tips?

Thanks,
Dominik

Try leaving the hookpoint exposed. Just use one or two kernels. Also watch for the float to lift rather than go down. With your bait on the bottom a carp will pick it up. This will lift you weight off the bottom and your float will rise. We call it a " lift bite" It is a classic sign of carp taking the bait.

i have a buddy who is a carp master, he only fish's for carp. i went a few time with him and now i cant stop. lol he like to use chicken feed in his bait balls. i made my own one day with old bread, taco shell's peanut butter flour cinnamon and a bit of corn syrup, and it work awesome...we called it "bread ball winner"!
it stays on the bait holder for 2-3 cast,
should try it out if u ever get stuck with out feeder bait.

Thanks for the recipe LogJam. Making your own baits is one of the great things about carp fishing. When you walk into a grocery store you see it with different eyes and your brain is thinking " hmmmm I wonder if this will work" .
