This is MB style walleye fishing. These young men have it down to a science. Run and gun technique with the use of a flasher. They are allowed 2 rods each but only use one. Lake Winnipeg walleyes are caught all throughout the water column. I posted in the video section but wanted everyone to see this. Please watch the complete video

thx redcat...cool vid. makes me jealous seeing them fish out of thier truck though. we havent drove out thus far but some of our smaller lakes could be ready.

This has been a bad year for ice here in MB. It has been unseasonabley warm, not that I will complain. There is only 30" of ice on the big lake, 24 on the red river and some of the deeper lakes are only at about 18". Normally this time of year you would need an extension on a gas auger just to hit the water, I remember a few years ago I had to drill 2-3 holes with my hand auger before I could get through.

I fish my lipless crankbaits a little more agressivley than these guys do.... I like to throw in a good rip every now and again. I also never thought of using the rainbow trout pattern. I use the perch pattern and the sexy shad. Look like it works tho.

Also notice the colour of the fish..... a trait of the south basin/ Red river walleye. Their nick name around here is the greenback

Yeah they were "clear". Havent targeted them through ice yet but we hit a few while crappie fishing. Cant wait to get on the severn river and do some "slip and hold" jigging.

That young many usually fishes Lake of the woods, he was born with a golden spoon so to speak. He has put a lot of energy into fishing.

Nice video Redcat.
Thanks for the coffee thru my nose too. I was taking a sip when I read your comment about there being ONLY 30 inches of ice on the big lake  Here in southern On we can get our lures to the bottom without even drilling on a lot of our big lakes.

Alfie.

Awesome video guy's and those are some hogs.Going to have to pick me up some of those live forage bait's what size's do you suggest.

As small as you can get away with. I am using 5/8oz on the river and 3/8oz on the lake. I like the glow perch and sexy shad(glow) patterns. You might want to look at the Koppers Live target.... Golden shiner model. Let the main screen scroll through all the pics, you will notice a beauty walleye with a golden shiner in its mouth caught through the ice..... notice the colours of the fish. Its a lake Winnipeg walleye. Then go to products and find the golden shiner.

Both the live forage and the live target have there place on my line. Both are rattle baits but they have different pitches. The live target is a higher pitch where as the live forage is a low pitch. Just the other day I was fishing in 9 feet of water with 30" of ice on top it..... I could hear the live forage rattlin when I ripped it.

Thank you very much for the info REDCAT going to pick some up and give them a try.

You can fish them naked or hang half a salted minnow off the belly hook. If you use a full minnow it will impede the action of the bait.... too much drag when you rip it

Cool once again thank's for the tip's i picked up alot of Darter's this season but haven't had a chance to try them this season no ice out this way the whole season have you tried the Darter's.

I have used the lindy darters not the salmo series. I find them on the light side for fishing the river, the max weight is 3/8 oz on the lindy. I have looked into the old salmo zipper and have interest in that, looks like it has potential through the ice.

The live target has a really good rattle in it. I went to Lockport Mb which is normally filled with fish in the winter and was catching 2 at a time on it. One on the belly hook and one on the tail hook..... fishing it naked. The live forage is new, I have used it on several occasions and had good luck with it. I just wish I could get out more to really give it a go

LOL atleast you got out we had no safe ice down this way at all and they are the lindy darter's i bought.i also bought some of the rapala clackin rap's but i well be stocking up on the live forage and the live targets.hopefully next season we get a cold winter so i can try lol.

I bought a few Clack'n raps with the hopes that the sound chamber would do wonders.... never really worked here. I lost interest in it, I tried it in the early season and later for pike. Landed a few on it but not the numbers that the other 2 baits mentioned do. I think you would be better off with the old rapala lipless model.

Right now there is from 30-34" of ice on the river, well where I would noramlly venture. Some places are never froze over. The lakes are well frozed but depending on depth they may only have 18", lake winnipeg in the south basin has a good 30". Normally this time of year we have 45-48" of rock solid ice. Mind you the weather has been much more people friendly if you know what I mean

Redcat,

I've had alot of succes with these style baits too for the past 2 seasons. They work well on Rainy River (my homewaters) and up in Myles Bay on LOTW as well.

Last year I really hit some good eyes on the Livetarget Golden shiner, but also hit some on the Rapala Clackin raps in various sizes/colors too.

This year I've been fishing the Rippin raps too, and they've worked really well on smaller fish. Its been successful on black crappies as well up in Sawbill.

I liked your comment about the rattles on these baits, lol. I can feel the rippin rap/golden shiner in 20ft of water, no problem. And thats on 35" of ice!

Anyone not using these baits on the hardwater is really missing out!
