In basic terms, how does one select hook size of a fly for fly fishing?

As a specific example, what would be a good hook size for fishing brown trout in the Grand River?

Depends on the size of what's hatching it could be anywhere from size 12 to 24 the later in the season the smaller the bugs get trout on the grand are supper selective because of the amount of pressure the river gets so you really have to match the hatch hope that helps

Thanks Andrew. Do you think I would have more luck floating a pink worm with spinning gear?

I don't know I always fly fish the grand I would say try your luck with flies first before spin gear
