Hey guys. I was lucky enough to get my hands on fresh roe. But my searching is leading me in circles.

1. What's the best way to remove the eggs from the skein for single egg cure

2. What's the process for curing them. I know it's salt, sugar and borax. Bit do I boil it all and dip or just sprinkle it on and let it dry...? Help :)

Thanks all

Look of the consummate sportsman video on egg curing, he uses the same method as me and does a very good job of explaining..

my first batch of roe came out like that, still catching fish until now, i follow roadsnakes video on youtube on how to cure eggs, hope this helps

After you borax cure they will usually shrivel up and go hard. That's when they are perfectly cured. Add them to water again and they go right back to normal. I like to add sugar water.

I have always relied on artificials more than roe but when I do use it I often use fresh uncured roe.

for loose eggs........1. river harden the eggs....2. pickling salt mixed in with the eggs.....3 place on paper towel or newspaper andvair dry in a cool area over night, or leave in fridge unsealed to air chill dry which is a bit faster.....4. package in small ziplock bags suck out air with a straw...5. pop them in the freezer....it will last forever like this, I still have roe from 3 years ago in the freezer done and they still work but I find myself using flies and plastic baits more often now. I hate tying roe bags lol.

Question - When catching a hen full of eggs, I see a lot of people bleed it and gut it right there (can't stand to see that) for the eggs. I prefer not to do that and would rather keep the fish intact and do all the un-pleasantries at home. Will the eggs spoil this way if I bring the fish home whole?

Thanks,

If she's loose.
Squeeze the eggs into a bag .
Cover eggs in river water and let sit for a few minutes.
Cured and ready to tie now.

I witnessed a guy on the bank once doing the belly rub on a trout and his buddy holding a tim hortons cup on the other end. Needles to say he did not get any eggs out of that fish. They released the fish right away so embarrassed , it was priceless . Good sports though , the fish wasn't gilled but left on the bank while they were molesting it.

Thanks tossing iron. Just wondering about taking the (only 1) fish home. Will the eggs spoil at all leaving the fish intact?

@ Fish F ha. Wasn't a male I hope.
@ ray ray No won't spoil.
If long drive home pack on ice.
You just lose the water harden eggs option.
I'm lazy.
Never been one to mess with cures.
