Hi i was wondering how to use a fluorocarbon leader , for example if i were using braided line would you tie the fluorocarbon leader to the braided line and the other end of the leader to your bait, lure? was always told its better to use fluorocarbon leader but never really came across on it, but would like to know on how do you use it? thanks would be a big help

I tie the floro leader to the braided line using a double uni knot, leaving a few feet (of leader material) to tie the lure to the floro using a reverse clinch knot or a palomar knot. The floro leader is much harder to see in the water, so it would make it easier for fish to be tricked into biting.

Fly fishing u tie the leader direct to the fly line but I'm thinking if it's reg line why not use a swivel to attach both pieces of line together?

yeah right? you can do that, as in tying the braided line to one end of the swivel and the leader to the other end? won;t the swivel break under stress, incase you catch a big fish?? lol?

Hopefully you use heavy enough gear to match your target species. However, surprises do happen and you cannot plan for those. I tend to use a slim beauty knot to join the fluorocarbon to the braid followed by a couple of overhand knots with the braid to help avoid slippage. I have about 6 ft of fluoro leader before I tie to a snap and swivel to aide in lure changing. I use 20 or 25 lb fluoro (iirc), which is pretty thick (since I fish for smaller pike), so I don't like tying knots with it. Tying one knot to the swivel saves me some headaches.

I'm thinking your weakest point is the leader or the knot,
I'm sure the swivel will be stronger than the leader unless your leader is 50lb and in that case why u using a leader?

The whole point of a leader at least in fly fishing I can relate to that more than braided line is to make those last few feet invisable to the fish and it breaks there rather than your $50 fly line!

Sure u could just tie right to the braided line but the whole point of the leader is so your rod don't get ripped in half on a snag and has a breaking point that what's my reasoning behind it is.

And a little to do with visibility but not as much as as having that breaking point in the line rig and not my rod! Maybe I'm exaggerating like I said I'm not too experienced with braided lines.

Especially when steelhead fishing, you would use a small swivel from the braid to the leader and the reason is that the bobber would be attached to the braid, so if the fish broke the line, it would break at the swivel and you would still have your bobber.

Another point of interest: you can buy fluorocarbon line by the spool and you can buy Fluorocarbon leader buy a small spool. I recommend the stuff made for leaders because it is a higher quality material that is more resistant to abrasion.
