Ok so heres my next question, are guys with a spinning set up frowned upon fishing the rivers or is it really not that big of a difference. I know I will end up using a pin eventually but I am so used to using a spinning set up or a baitcaster that my casting is quite precise. I just noticed that there is some slack in the line in comparison to the guys using a pin. Also, if I am using a spinning set up, should I not go brain mainline and a fluoro leader?

You can use a spinning setup no problem, no one will frown at you. If you are using a float and roe, I would use mono line so that it floats nicely on the surface to reduce drag. braid wont be good for you presentation. If you throwing lures and spinners, braid is fine. And if your floating, flouro leader is best, sinks better and more invisible

So hey OFF. I finally did it, fished a river... I now see why you all love it so much! No regrets! Although I did get into an argument with someone who hooked my boots twice trying to catch a salmon who was 2 yards away from me just relaxing.

He must have been confused....out there targeting boots and he stumbles upon a nice green one hanging out in the current.

Awesome! Suffix siege clear 8 pound good? or use heavier mono main with a fluoro lead still?

I would say 8lb mono is good for steel head. just make sure your flouro lead is 6lb or less so when you break off you keep your float

My buddy that took me out had his fly rod and a center pin. Both looked fun! Eventually I will love to get out and fish for smallies on a fly rod.

I personally do not frown toward any one using a different method of fishing on the river. Fly fishing is my preference to catch any fish but If you are happy fishing with a spin set up or baitcaster good for you. It's what ever makes YOU happy. I primarily fly fish but do use a baitcaster sometimes depending on what fishing I am doing. On the days I catch nice fish with the bait caster the phrase "man, this would have been so much better on the fly" enters my head. Again, its just what I prefer.

Congrats on the steelhead, its a beauty for sure.

Don't limit yourself because you are comfortable with a certain method. Fly fishing is hard and the learning curve takes a long time. But man, once you get that first fish and the ones after that it will just consume you. Fly rods, spey rods, spin etc etc, try it all. It's all another method to do the same thing.....Fishing.

Why not give a baitcaster a shot while drifting, rapala makes the rtype baitcaster specially for these situations if im not mistaken, id say you will have an easier time drifting a bit longer IMHO, never tried it though but it would make more sense to me IMO, ill give it a shot and tell you how it went! LOL!!!
