Ice Fishing

I am picking up my ice fishng tent next week and was wondering what would be the best way to heat the inside. I was planning on grabbing one of those coleman grills so it can keep us warm plus we will be able to have a fish fry. Thanks

You're gonna kill yourself dood. In an enclosed space like tents you have to worry about Carbon Monoxide gas and fire. Here are some that you can look at.

But I think the best one around is the Coleman Procat propane heater. It can be used indoors or enclosed spaces. Do not use a grill, bbq for heat, it will kill you; even if you leave the door open, all the heat will escape net effect is zero. Procat is the way to go.

I have a little portable colmen that works alright.

My friend has one of the 9000btu buddy heaters and its keeps the portable hut roasting.

I have a quick fish 6, a six man portable hut and use a Mr. Heater tank top heater. I won't use anything else. I had a Buddy heater that would turn off after a little nudge. Plus it just coulddn't even warm my 3 man hut. I have the one burner and I have hats, gloves and jackets off while fishing in the hut. That my friend is the way to go. I have buddies who live in North Pole Alaska and fish regularily in temps as low as -50. And they use the single burner tank top heater. They have the two and three burner as well but it may be overkill. If you have a full propane tank it will last a few trips. I have mine on the entire time while fishing. It has a low, medium and high feature. I usually keep it on medium. Depends how toasty you want to be. Oh, and its around 50 bucks

Literally one of the best ice fishing gear purchases I made.

That's a infrared heater, they are awesome in large open spaces. The infrared rays goes everywhere, but if one of your buddies stands infront of you all the heat is gone.....lol. The Procat is a catyltic heater that heats the air, as I recall. It will heat objects and the surrounding air.

Two kettles of fish here, one heats people quickly (infrared), the other heats the entire hut. Both can run on the 20 lb tank, but with the Procat you have to have a different hose.

I use the coleman grill in a 4 person hut... We fish in short sleeved shirts. :grin:

LOL I have used afew things in my Hut and tent. one year I took a Propane Deepfryer out on a 20pound tank it was OK till I touched my line to it and lost my fav jigging spoon.

Most of my friends and me run either 3 burner or Single burner Propane. On them little green tanks. I run a single with the Green tank , light and easy to use plus if ya get a hunger on you can cook some soup or instent noodles up fast. boil water for coffie or hot chocolet

My bad...I was thinking of something completely different It is infrared. yes you are correct. This thing heats up the six man hut very well. Never had a friend stand in front of me blocking heat......thats why I opted for the six man tent, no one that close to you.

They are great radiant heaters. Today is the last day on sale at CT in Toronto for $35.99 from their regular rip-off price of $59.99. If you are fishing with kids at all make sure they are seated so that they cannot look at it. Infrared rays damage the retina over the long run.

Well when I was inside the hut, it felt pretty comfortable because I cover apron of the hut with the snow so the wind can not sip in but some days it is quite cold then I would use the heating gel they used for chafing dishes (you can buy them at the camping store or Great Canadian wholesale $ 1.00 each). They each last about 2.5 hours and they are light and small and cheap. You'll only need a little heat to keep you going (remember you are ice fishing not enjoying the ice) or you can spend About $100 for Mr. Heater and about 6 to 8 bucks for the propane.

I too shovel snow over the hut's apron. This not only helps with retaining heat but removes light from within the hut which allows a clear view into the ice hole. If your fishing shallow water there's nothing cooler than watching whle you jig and see a fish strike.

Hehe watching the fish strike the jig then pull 'er up is only us ice fishermen can get. Nothing beat that.

whatever you do don't get the procat. IMO, a garbage heater. i had mine for 2 days and returned it. bought a mr. buddy heater and never looked back. i bought the $5 piece that allows me to use it with a 20lb propane tank. golden.

What was bad about the Procat? Usually coleman stuff is good.

I didnt think there would be any issues using propane stoves to heat huts? This is how they did it at a little ice hut I rented on simcoe a few years ago.

I bought the Coleman catalytic heater that goes on top of the mini propane cans last year, havent had a chance to test it out yet.

I've been in plenty of huts with propane stoves for heat. Propane lets off carbon monoxide, but not too much. As long as the huts somewhat vented, all should be fine. I own a coleman catalytic heater for my portable hut, love it! Sitting in -30 in a t-shirt is much more comfortable then out in the open.
