Never been ice fishing before but looking to try for the first time this winter , going to buy a cheap rod from Canadian tire (or should I get a tip up ?) as for bait what do you guys think would work best? I will be fishing in a pond with pike crappie bass and other panfish in the London area pond mills . The fishing store here has these things called wax worms but I don't know anything about then has anyone ever used ? And as for rod set up is it a hook and split shot type deal , and line ? Any advise will be a great help , thanks!

You won't catch bass through the ice as the become lethargic in cold water and if you soo you are one lucky person .. Live bait works best for pike perch and crappie .. Waxworks work well for perch and crappie.. You can use jig heads or drop shot setup

Well, actually you can get bass through the ice, it's practiced quite regularly in the states, but you're not allowed to target them right now anyways.

Unless you are sight fishing or inside a hut a regular rod will work. Or, do what I did---I took the top section from a broken rod, drilled a hole in a wooden dowel, then taped/wired my reel to the dowel..

Youd be surprised, I've caught my fair share of bass through the ice. All unintentional of course fishing for walleye.

Id give those wax worms on a panfish jighead a try. Im sure they wont dissapoint you! And minnows on a hook or jighead will work good aswell.

cheap setup from CT will do, grab a spool of 8lb test line too. get some #4 treble hooks and 8inch leaders. For pike get 3 to 5 inch sucker minnows from the bait shop, hook them back by the tail (hook and leader) then 8 to 10 inch above that 1(3 to 1(2 oz lead, keep the minnow about a foot off bottom and (tie) off the line to a stick in the snow, when the pike hits the stick will bend over and you will know you have a hit (youtube this, easyer to explain)

Now for perch, crappie and the Bass, 1I8 th oz jighead with them wazzies will work, Pin head minnows or Real dew worms (if you can find any) work best. But blood worms, honey worms ect from gulp work too.

Oh feed worms from a pet store work great too
