Has anyone tried to do anything like this before? I have a Jetta wagon that I just got and it cant store a rod in the spare tire compartment so I am going to make something like this. I am thinking I will have to do the option shown in the first two pictures since I dont have those handles in the back of my car.

That seems like a lot of work with little pay off, what is the purpose past keeping the rods off the ground? is this not something a hard case would not do as well??

lol you can all have one for the low low price of $200.00, comes complete with a LIMITED lifetime warranty!

It looks to me like a very very easy thing to build. The first option just has a rope tied between the two garment hangers and then the PVC stand at the back. I dont know how much PVC goes for but i'm assuming I can do all this for under 20 bucks. Im not even going to seal the connections of the PVC so that it can be unassembled and stored in the spare tire compartment when not in use. Total construction time should be less than 30 minutes and thats mainly just for measuring and cutting the PVC.

It will be a huge help for me as i'll be able to travel with my rods in the car all of the time and not lose any storage. Also on camping trips the rods can be stored up top while the camping gear goes below. iJay I bet a hard case would cost more than this whole project.

Sorry, maybe I worded that wrong.

PVC is cheap, each one of thoseconnectors are not.

I just built 2 cases for 6 rods cost me $25 for both. I met up with Steel_Ed on the weekend he even stated it was a great idea.

Legit, 4" diameter pvc pip comes 8' length for $16 I bought 2 stationary end caps and 2 "screw-style" end caps. I did buy the PVC Cement just to be sure and waterproof. All in all cost me $25.

I added small holes that I had fished some softer string thru, one at the top and one at the bottomI tie them tight so the rods dont bounce around in transit.
The reason I decided to go waterproof is we are now able to attach the tube to the roof rack for added space in the van when we go out if needed.

Oh and I added some thick spongy foam to the inside of both end caps to protect the tip and butt of the rods.

Only shitty thing and difference I can see about the set up that I have and the set up posted, the posted holders do accept the reels. Mine do not.

this is mainly to get the rods off of the ground. I have a few hard cases that came with rods and I never use them. I often bring 5 rods with me when I go on big trips and its nice to have the reels on the rods rigged up and ready to go.

You think the connectors will be that expensive? I figure I only need one 8' section of 1" or smaller PVC, 5 four way connectors, two three way connectors, two elbow joints and four end caps. I figured the 8'ish section would be around 10 bucks, the connectors and elbow joints around a buck each and maybe 50 cents each for the end caps.

Home depot end caps were about $2.50/each Elbows were $2.00 each

Then again I was in the 4" Diameter I am sure that had something to do with it, let us know how the build goes! I was thinking of something suspended from the inside of our van as well. I am sure bordum will push me into it one of these days!

Was just talking about this in the car, some good ideas here especially the top PVC stand in case you don't have anything to hook up to in the rear.

By the way, you ever see these? Magnetic rod holders.

I've seen those in t.v shows. I would be worried about dirt, dust and other debris entering my reels... a case would be a must.

i've used them they're more transporting around to different spots around the river, not for transporting to the river, imagine a nice big stone flying off the back of a big rig and taking out 2 $700 rods

ya ive seen that one on TV too. I would be too worried about small stones making nicks in the rods but if you are just working spot to spot on the river its a great way to avoid breaking your rod down between spots. Its a great option for guides. I was planning on going to home Depot yesterday after work but I made the mistake of stopping in at the local fishing store and a 10 minute visit turned into an hour and I did have enough time to get to home depot before volleyball! lol

Cut a hole in your cars roof liner and attach magnets!

This is getting outta control very quickly. Seems more than obvious that those magnetic holders arent for use on highways or anything opver 30km/h

After reading this thread I think I want to use the interior roof of my van. I am going to give this a shot when I find a free moment, even if its just bungee cords.

The rear PVC stand and rope/bu gee between rear garment/passenger handles looks like a great option.

iJay two bungee cords would be great if I had the handles at the back too but I only have them at the front which is why I have to build the PVC stand or attach something to the interior of my car. No need for cutting the interior and attaching magnets lol. I wish I would have found the time to go to the store yesterday but hopefully today I will be able to pick it all up.

For 20 bucks or less I agree jlisk, seems like a no brainer to me.

well I finally got my hands on all of the material needed, total cost just over 21 bucks. Assembly time took me about 40 minutes but im sure it can be done faster. Here are a few pics, the rods were all sagging towards the middle so I tied elastics to the rope to hold the rods in place. The elastics can also be slid on the rope to make headroom for passengers in the back. Still quite a bit of room left after packing 6 rods and two bags of tackle.

You'll notice on my version the handle doesn't stick out the end. I couldn't fine the 4 way tees at Home Depot or Rona so I just bought these 3 way joints and if I cant find 4 ways in the next short while and if they aren't staying in there i'm just going to cut a hole in the back of each joint.

the two short 6' rods fell out of the holders on the way to work this morning so it looks like the modification will be needed. Now to find a hole saw...
