Hello all!

I've lived in Hamilton my entire life, and loved fishing since I was a child. I never realized until last night that Hamilton has fishing spots that I can get to by bus! I've always just fished on vacation, or at my in-laws (riverside property on the Grand River just outside of Grand Valley) cause I don't drive and figured day trips were kinda outta the question without going with someone with a car.

Last night a group of friends I've recently started hanging out with more just out of the blue decided to go fishing. We went to Princess Point at 8:30 and (since some of us did not show up till 10:00) just fished right off the foot bridge (43.273518,-79.893513). First catch of the day was a small yellow perch caught by my roomate and then nothing but catfish. The perch was probably caught just on the tail end of their heightened activity time. I caught four catfish, taking home two trophies, one trophy for smallest fish, and one trophy for biggest fish. The smallest fish maybe 6 inches, the big fish was quite possibly the largest fish I have ever caught at easily 20 inches!

I love to fish, but until last night I don't think I'd caught one in almost a decade! Now, I've never been out hitting the water a lot, but at least 3 or 4 weekends a summer would have access to fishing, and when I can be hitting the water, I am! I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to catch a fish, but a big part of fishing for me (given my track record) was just being on the water, casting and reeling, and relaxing.

Now that I know there are spots I can get to via public transit, I'll probably be out hitting the water a lot more often. My spots will most likely be Coots Paradise, under the lift bridge, and the Burlington Waterfront. Anyone know if there are bait shops close to those locations?

So, that's about it, that's my story. Happy casts and perhaps I'll see some of you out on the water!

Nice Intro!

Welcome to the Site.

Great to hear youve got back the Fishing Bug!

KNOW YOUR LOCAL FISHING HOLES ... LIKE THE BACK of your HAND.

I'm hear in Toronto (So dont know alot about hamilton fishing) but I take the TTC everywhere around the City (Go Train, Go Bus and the Island Ferry)

You'd be surprised at how many locations there are, that are not really too diffiucult to get to.

Don't worry about the stares on the Bus or what not - It's actually nice talking to people who are interested in where your going.

Hamilton has all kinds of fish: Bass, Carp, Pike, Trout .. Catfish

ps; HammerCarp (Nice Board Member) is in Hamilton and into the Carp fishing big time!

I also think "Alfeegee" lives there as well!

Read the posts, Get out and explore, learn to pack basic and light... and your there!

Best of luck!

[edit] It works! Thank goodness! For someone who loves fishing I am certainly not a patient man sometimes! [/edit]

Welcome. You can also take the bus to Pier 8 , Bayfront Park and the Canada Centre for Inland Waters. Take some corn along with you. You'd be surprised at what you can catch.

As Blair said I'm in Hamilton too. Fishing World in Stoney Creek and Bills on Upper James are good bait shops. The other place I go is just off Sherman, The Tackle Shack. A guy runs a "shack" right out of his garage. If you want to catch Cats, and I mean big Cats, the bait is in the nearest grocery store. 1 inch cubes of frozen sardine or frozen shrimp ring are great. Anything that gives off a lot of smell.
Maybe we will meet on the water. I don't drive so I am a captive of transit or when my friends want to go. Seems I want to get out more than they do.

Alfie.
