I am going to get a new reel within the next few weeks, probably during the reel trade in time at BPS, and while i was searching their catalogue, I came upon this.http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/s...?ordProd=Y&CMID=BOTTOM_selectitems#itemDetail

This reel looks really different, and I'm thinking, hey, maybe a reel that not everyone gets might be good. Weighing in at 7 ounces and can carry a lot of line, it sounds quite attractive. And at their price at 70 USD, what a deal if it's good.

This reel also has those teeth on the spool that doesnt let a birdsnest happen at all. Sounds like a gimmick, so I did some research via Google and I came across this 2 other forums posting that it works.

To sum up those forums, they said that the reel was smooth, feels as if it could be a shimano/daiwa, has a drag that is a beast, and has a 2 year unconditional warranty. --> I don't know of another reel that offers that.

BUT, on the last page of that stripersonline forum, it does say that about after a year, it does break down. Everything just seemed to stop working. And after that breakdown, I'm guessing it's time to use your 2 year warrantee

Since we are in Canada, and that reel manufacturer is in US, is it even worth it for me to try the reel but having to risk sending it back?
Or do you guys think I'm better off sticking with Shimano / Daiwa?

Thanks for any opinions guys!

looks interesting...
i can see those teeth working in preventing birdsnests...but how often do you really get tangles with a spinning set up... unless it's fresh line you just put on that has zero memory.

personally i would stick with something a little more brand name and trustworthy.

Here is a little tip to avoid that bird nest with new line.

While spooling the reel every say 20 sec stop grab the line and give it a tug to get it all to tighten up around the reel. If u just fill the spool when u go to cast boof out comes a bunch of line!

As for that reel I like the look but I don't get how those teeth prevent birds nests?

Thats why I stopped using bait casters too many tangles.

i'd say you should get some feedback from someone you know who has one before getting one, go with something you know works

I would give it a try but that's my opinion but try to contact the makers of this reel and see if the warnty is continues or does it just carry over to the new reel and for the bird best issue I found that its when too much line Is put on the reel that kinda fish you after I know down in the states the fish a lot for bass but here in Canada its more fish that will test your drag. I would look up more and contact them and are what they say

I'm assuming the teeth will stop loose loops from going completely over. Kinda hard to explain without using an actual reel in hand haha.

Wows. Thanks for the opinions. Maybe I'll make the final decision come reel trade in time.
BTW, are there any hopes of shimano taking part of it this year?

What do you mean by shimano taking part of it this year?
I thought all reels were included in the deal? the cost of the reel determines the amount saved, no?

i've done this special two years in a row at BPS.

from what i've read before, shimano doesnt take part in this. So basically you can use your coupon to discount anything BESIDES a shimano reel. Dont konw. Have you gotten the reel trade in and gotten a shimano?

Very interesting design. I agree, while it screams gimmick I can imagine how those teeth could in theory reduce birds nests, but the added friction would reduce the length of your casts; that would be the biggest trade-off IMHO. I would prefer my line coming off of the spool silky smooth with little to no resistance.

I think YAWN nailed it... If you're using mono-filament line, while spooling pull on it every once in a while to get some memory into the line. Keep it taught and never over-spool. You should be fine.

I would go with a Daiwa, personally. Until enough people have used this reel and can say that it doesn't break down after one year  I would spend my cash on something proven.

Yes, I've purchased a shimano sedona and my shimano stradic through this trade-in discount. perhaps they have changed it this year.

well, ive read that they havent participated in 2 years.....but who knows? May I ask what year you did this?
I guess ill try to get a shimano this year too. Sahara probably. stradic is too far out of my price range and symetre is heavy for some reason.

Yea, I would have too. Except earlier in the year, I bought a Daiwa TD-Pro. When i took it home, the bail wouldnt close. I was pretty sad since I live in markham and i drove to and back from vaughan mills 3 times in 7 days. They tried to fix it, but after that it still didnt work. I gave up and returned that reel.

It was pretty good, i got it when it was 79.99 CDN. original price was 119.

But yea. I'll see whats available when it comes time for the reel trade in.
