I plan to go to to Opeongo (East arm) in Algonquin Park for the bass opener and again in August. Can anyone tell me how the smallie fishig is. I just joined the forum. Any tips or spots would be appreciated.

i've never been there, but go with usual bass stratagies, do some google work, you might even find a site dedicated to the lake opeongo bass fisheries, good luck with your search

East arm is an excellent choice for a bass opener trip. The smallies there are skillfull fighter's and will test your gear. The bass will just be moving off their redd's and be in attack of the many baitfish in that deep spring fed lake, concentrate on the shore lines and drop offs not to far off, there are some excellent sunken logs and boggy lilypad areas back in Annie's bay. I have had great success with just conventional jerkbait's this time of year, cast toward shore and cover areas and rip hard through. (Bring some rapala's perch imitations, deep diver's, suspending whatever), sunset/ cloudy days are good to bring some topwater out. I have found the East part of the arm the best, but they are strong populations throughout, concentrate on inlet too Annie's Bay and all through it. No need for too much gear, simplify...Suggest a watertaxi to a site near, this is a long trek from the outfitters. Call Opeongo outfitter's they will fix you up. Have fun

Opeongo, is a great fishing lake.. it looks like i may be replying to this a little late - as you prob. are already on your way there, but for future info.

East arm is beautiful, I usually do most of my fishing and camping up by annie's bay. and have caught the majority of my SM up there. Plenty of 18-3 foot drops and cover provide great places for the smallies to chill. I usually canoe in so I am concerned with weight and mostly fish tubes... they havent let me down yet.

Whats really distracting is the about of trout that i see pass under my canoe in schools, simply passing my bait by and laughing at me as they do. ;)

Assuming you have a map, have a look at the mouth of Annie's Bay where it connects to Opeongo, right through there is a sandy pass that connects the two lakes, around 3-8 foot poolsand drops to a nice 12 in the middle, I have spent most of my time fishing there and have nothing but luck. Again lots of trout checking out my canoe.

twice now, on separate occasions, a black bear has sauntered out to take a peak at my luck..

wish you a safe trip and luck in fishing.
