Harper Government Announces Funding for Lake Simcoe and South Eastern Georgian Bay Clean-Up Projects

JACKSON’S POINT, Ont. -- January 7, 2013 -- Today, the Honourable Peter Van Loan, Member of Parliament for York-Simcoe, on behalf of the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada’s Environment Minister, announced that funding is available for clean-up projects through the Lake Simcoe/South-eastern Georgian Bay Clean-Up Fund.

The five-year $29 million fund aims torestore the ecological health of Lake Simcoe and South-eastern Georgian Bay and improve water quality for the residents and wildlife of the region.

“Lake Simcoe and South-eastern Georgian Bay are important natural resources, vital sources of drinking water, and regional economic drivers. Our Government is proud to contribute to projects that will help ensure the long-term sustainability of Canada’s lakes and waterways,” said MP Van Loan.

The Lake Simcoe/South-eastern Georgian Bay Clean-Up Fund will support community-based projects that are focused on priorities such as reducing phosphorous inputs from urban and rural sources, restoring fish and aquatic wildlife habitat and populations, and addressing nearshore toxic and nuisance algae growth.

This important investment to clean up Lake Simcoe and South-eastern Georgian Bay is part of the Government’s Action Plan for Clean Water, which includes projects like the clean-up of contaminated sediment in Great Lakes Areas of Concern, and action on pollution in Lake Winnipeg. It builds on the success of the 2007-2012 $30 million Lake Simcoe Clean-Up Fund.

Good news is good news... however I would of rather seen that kind of money used to run the experimental lakes a few more years. A step forward :)

good to hear they are keeping up with the lake simcoe clean up. this has been going on in one form or another for a number of years, and it seems to be working. i have read some studies that show that natural lake trout reproduction rebounding, from the mid 90s when natural repro was almost non-existant. they have even cut the stocking of lakers by around half (last i checked was around 50 000 now). the whitefish are slowly picking up some repro too, but not nearly to the same degree, and still remains mostly put and take, with stocking numbers still over 100 000. i think most of us who fish simcoe have seen the herring numbers rebound, with massive schools swimming under our holes. from what i understand the open season for herring is a while away still, as there are for the most part only 2 year-classes of them with those huge numbers. this is going to make for some pig lakers, pike, re-introduced muskie and those elusive huge simcoe walleye.

anyway IMO they are making great advancements to ward off the eutrophication of this once great coldwater fishery. Lets hope they keep up the work!

Nice to hear that Ontario's lakes are being taken care of....it would be nice to see Hamilton Harbour cleaned up...it has improved immensely though which is nice
