With the steelhead season coming to a close I think back fondly to the days of freezing hands, ice sheets, blizzards oh yeah and fresh chrome by the dozen.

Remember when you couldn't keep your lighter in the front pocket because it would get to cold to light? AHH yes good times.

This is a question that's been on my mind for a while. On an average day, out of the fish you hook how many are landed?

I don't mean float drop maybe a fish for a moment thing. More like some kind of a head shake felt.

This is more applying to the use of beads and roe. I would think multiple trebles on a hot n tot would have a higher landing percentage than a lil size 14 hook.

This seems more evident on days with way more fish. On a short or slow day you might go 3/3 or 0/2 and I wouldn't say that's exact data. Break offs are also a somewhat different story, you might get a perfect hook set but lose to fish for some other reason/

I know it might seem that way and I can recall the hookup percentage being superb with tots, but the landing percentage really wasn't any better than with a single hook :). My landing percentage with hotntots that had their factory hooks replaced was always somewhere between 50-80%.

some days i loose lots! for instance the day i met rainbow i went 3 for 15!?!?!?! i get pretty rough on them because i dont believe in babying them on 4 pound leads. usually 8 pound eq. or higher.so maybe too rough i unbutton them? most of my fishing this year was within a mile or two of the lake when the fish can be hot and on the move. maybe crappy hooksets ? when it all boils down basically i suck! it doesnt bother me if i lose them after a minute or two anyway. all i want it a couple of shakes and the first few runs. most of my fish are lost in the the first minute, so i got what i wanted and stressed the fish less. dont get me wrong, i like to land them, and some days i bat 1000, but for some reason its the ones that got away that keep me up at night wanting MORE.......

I'm don't use tots a lot as I have mini.all success on them. Single siwash spinners is my fave for still head. My landing % on steels depend on the fight and the size. I use 8lb mono on spinners and 4lb fluoro leader when drifting roe. If its a huge fresh steel. My chances of landing it is better if i use the spinner. But the chances of hooking is better on roe because of preaentation.

Thanks. That's interesting I haive never used tho tots for bows but on hardware I noticed a slightly high landing percentage over a float set up. Probably had something to do with the 14 and 16lb test I was using with them vs. 6 or 8 on the float rod.

I started with light line but I find myself going as high as I can get away with and still getting schooled by fish from time to time, If they get in the really fast water I am often screwed. I fished a good amount close to the lake this winter, I found some fish to just be nuts. Middle of the winter I had fish jumping and cartwheeling from time to time. Sometimes I knew I was screwed in the first few seconds by the fish by just the power of it. Over this season and all the fish I still didn't get one over 11 pounds, I think you guys know where I fish and the 15s are not as common but I did see a few nice 12 and 13s landed. I definitely lose a good share of fish and it sounds like I do some similar stuff to you.

Seems to me too that its the ones that got away get you back on the water again.

Good point, I also really enjoy the strike on hardware. I use it sometimes when the water is crazy high but still clear.

My BEST day fishing this winter was 6/26 and that was from sunrise till sunset. Tell you what i lost 20 fish but it does not meter. It was constant action and that is reward for me. I don,t care how many fish i loose as longest there is an action of some sort even if the suckers are hitting. I had days when i hit 10/10 and not move an inch from original spot i fished at but that gets old sometimes. But that day was the best, i had to move and look for the fish i would hit 2 or 3 and move again.
Once again there was a lot of days when i hit 0/0.

I find the first run of fish ( after spending summer in the big lake )I have horrible ratios, a little rustic at first but warm up after a few fish. Typically though anywhere from 40% and up, hovering between 75% - 85% as an average?

My best days this winter was near the end of march start of april. My favorite day I remember clearly, It was a chilly -4 or 5. 40km+ winds blowing straight off the lake. Heavy snow and sleet throughout the day. I was alone on the trib. Water was running around 3 feet higher than normal and dropping hard with around a foot of visibility at 6 30 am and increasing throughout the day. I believe that day I went 16 for 30+ from first to last light and felt like a noob. After a while I just didn't think it was actually another fish that dropped the float.

Dozer I would say that's a good average. If i had to put numbers on it I would say on the big huron water 65% to 80% being really good. The gbay tribs I haven't fished as hard but my average seems higher there, never made it to a lake o trib.

Watched a young guy this past fall fishing a hole for quite some time and no fish....then just as he was getting the lazy going on or maybe his last drift or two...BAM...Fish on for all of about 5 secs a few sweet ariels and it was gone. Dropped his hands and rod to his sides and i thought he was gonna cry....lol. But as i looked at him i wanted to laugh....cause thats fishing. Sometimes you win hooking all day....and other days you cant seem to keep them on. I have to think sometimes its how aggressive a bite is on as to how well its hooked. Have had lots of days with poor percentage of fish landed, but also lots of days with them all landed.

I would say he handled it well. Saw a man slam his rod because he didn't land the fish he was fighting and take note he already landed a fish before that. I was shocked (but laughing on the inside).

LOL sounds like me dave....

I find it depends on a few factors, but especially "freshness" of fish, and "type" of water. Hot chromers (often fresh run fall fish) can humble the stats, especially if you hook them in fast-flowing tribs. Opening day dropbacks help pad the %. Overall, I'd say I run about 60. That being said, I'd rather go 3 for 10 on hot fish than 9 for 10 on sluggards.

too much to read there. I got extremely good at landing fish. I remember multiple 7/7 days this winter... but thats not to say you dont have some 4/7 days from time to time or what have you. I should have kept better track.
