Hi Guys,
I am a newbie looking to get into fishing. I moved to Tronto recently and have never used a fishing line/bait.
I see that most people learn the ropes from friends at a nearly age.
I am 30 yrs old and my friends are not into fishing.
Are there any schools that will teach you the basics of how to hook a bait, how to cast a line etc etc.

I went to canadian Tire and could not figure out which rod/reel to buy.

I appreciate your help.

Hi there, welcome to the forum. There are specific fishing opportunities in the GTA, and they significantly increase as you head north of the city. Fishing has become a sport where different types of fishing are so specialized that buying a rod and reel really depends on what type of fish you're targeting. A good all purpose set up would be a spinning reel with a two piece rod. Try not to cheap out - you usually get what you pay for. You can check some of the larger outfitters - they have a better selection than Canadian Tire and often better price also. LeBaron's, Bass Pro are two that I use. There's a myriad of information available on the internet including this site. I suggest you browse and read as much as you can, then come back and ask specific questions to the species and waters you intend to fish. The experts are here and will help.

Hey,

I'm just finishing my first season of fishing and am also 30 years old. Certainly not too old of a dog to learn a new trick.

I learned what I needed to get by through youtube videos, asking questions to friends, asking questions here, and using Google anytime I come across a term I don't recognize.

The Internet is definitely a powerful tool where you can ask "stupid questions" and find the answers quickly with a search. I've definitely searched things like "how to cast a spinning rod", and even before that "what is a spinning rod".

If you're looking for what gear to get, look around for reviews for gear that you have available in your local stores (or online if you're comfortable going that route). Once you've got an idea based on your budget, what stores you have around, and what kind of fishing you're going to be doing, then post up here with what you're thinking and the community here will be very willing to offer their 2 cents.

Come back often, we love to help!

Another 30+ yr old noob here. I don't have any serious fishermen friends either but as Pinck pointed out there's a lot of info online and do not underestimate how helpful fellow fishermen are. Just this weekend I was out scouting JC Saddington Park to see if the Salmon were biting and met a really nice guy who not only shared tips but even let me cast a few with his gear.

One thing though, there is almost too much information out there so don't get stuck reading the reviews/guides and just go out and experiment.
