I am wondering who makes their own lures?
Other than fly tying i make my own mepps type spinners and 1 1/2oz-2 1/2 oz bucktail spinnerbaits for pike and muskie. I tried to make some rapala type crankbaits, but have been unsuccessful so far...i cant get the action right yet but havent given up.

Here is some bucktail spinners i painted and tyed bucktail.

I tie flies for trout and spinner rigs for walleye fishing. Have a kit that I take with me - beads, blades, swivels and hooks. Not much into painting them though. It's all about colour and size, so i carry a good variety.

Anyone ever thought about making some specialized custom crankbaits/topwater? SO far i have 2 finished i made a few years ago...one is a j-8 rapala painted to look like a shad of sorts. The other is a red/white Hula Popper made out of bass wood(casts unbelievably far). Neither have caught many fish yet...lol (but i havent used them too much)
I have a few others almost done, one is a 3 piece jointed that looks like a small snake. Can throw up some pics if anyone is interested in seeing them.

Nice lures!

I've been thinking about making my own. What kind of paint do you use, and what do you use to seal the paint job?

I used to make some inline spinners and safety pin style spinners, and have caught a good number of fish on them. However, I have moved onto making custom fishing rods lol.

I use powder paint for the heads and blades and bake for durability, then i use vinyl paints for the details. All sealed in using envirotec lite. I'll get some pics up of the cranks.

Well i havent gotten around to pulling the wood baits out for pics but i have taken some pics of my newest painted lures. I had 4 cranks(2 rapala HJ-14, One Ripplin Redfin, One Bomber Long A) that wouldnt run true due to chipped paint. So i stripped the paint off and hit em up with some flourescent orange and black tiger stripes, painted some eyes on and game them 2 coats of envirotex.

Here is the contraption i put together so i could coat 4 lures at once and not have to buy anything...made from a broken salvaged shoe rack and some dowels. Works great!

Those are some awesome baits!! Well done!

I tried making a bunch of in-line spinners. I bought a kit from luremaking.com. You can make a whack of spinners for very little money. They are not the best quality but they are great for kids learning to fish (you don't mind when they loose 'em).

I tied a bunch of buck tail jigs and inline muskey spinners. I really enjoyed it but just don't have the time!
