Markham pond 45 is a storm pond at Mingay and 16th... go north on Mingay and the pond is on your left. You can park along the road there, or take the first left and park at the little circle at the end.

I arrived at this pond at 8:30 AM on a partly cloudy weekday morning. I fished the west end of the pond because it's small and weedy, plus there is a lot of interesting structure at the narrow section connecting the small bays to the main part of the pond.

It looks like you can access the pond from all directions, but you may have to tramp through some brush to do it. There is a mowed down trail along the west end of the pond, leading from the circle at the end of the side road.

Here are some pics of the pond from the southwest corner, where I did most of my fishing.

Looking east.

I caught 6 largies in about an hour and a half using my ultralight combo. The biggest two are shown below. Two others were a little smaller, and the final two were smallfry.

Caught using a spinner, red blade with black spots. I stopped using the spinner shortly thereafter due to the weeds.

Caught using a dark-red grub with a chartreuse twister-tail, rigged weedless with no weight, using a darting retrieve. This fish hit the bait just under the surface and caused quite a commotion when I set the hook. I love that! (Sorry for the weird angle on the pic!)

This place looks like prime largemouth habitat, and I got good results here. Come prepared to fish in slop.

Toober, thanks for discovering this one.

This pond is just loaded with bass! I think the bass just recently arrived in the past 3 or 4 years, so there are no hawgs in there yet, but the numbers are just astonishing!

I arrived at the pond at about 7:00 PM on August 19th. I fished for about 2 hours until around 9:00 PM.

I fished from the X on the map below, and casted into the circled area.

On my first cast, I nailed a decent sized largemouth. After that I was getting them almost every cast. If I didn't get a fish, I at least got a hit... I assume that most of the missed hits were from bass that were too small to get the hook into their mouths.

I could see bass fingerlings no more 3 or 4 inches hammering my gulp minnow right by shore.

After a while I got bored of using the gulp minnow, so I decided to try out my newest lure, a frog finished skitter-pop... courtesy of Snypa. ;D

First cast, another largemouth. In about 15 minutes I nailed about 5 or 6 of them. I could see that it would soon be getting dark, so I went back to the Gulp minnow while there was still enough light for the bass to see it.

I kept nailing them on the gulp minnow until it started getting dark.

It was now time for top water, and my go-to lure, the black torpedo.

I nailed them on the torpedo for another 20 minutes before I had enough and decided to call it a night.

In the end, I caught at least 30 largemouth in the 2 hours I was there! ;D

All I can say is that this pond will be just as good as Vaughan 91 in a couple of years.

Enjoy!

I went here tonight to try out my new mini-king spinner bait, courtesy of Bigbassrich.

First cast, BOOM! I hooked into a huge crappie!

Then it was fish almost every cast with the mini-king spinner-bait for the next 20 minutes before the sun started going down.

I then spotted a BEAVER swimming around in the water! I was lucky to snap this picture before he dove under water.

How the heck did a beaver get into a storm pond?

Anyway, I put on the black torpedo for some top water before I packed up the gear for the night.

So there is a Beaver in this pond! Now that I think of it, I remember seeing a beaver in another storm pond, but I can't remember which one.

Went to markham pond 45 and found some bass. This was last saturday at 6pm-8pm, i went with a friend of mine (torpedo911)

we started off on the far east side, but it was pretty uncomfortable fishing there so we kept moving until we rearched this point thing. it was all the way west (next time im just parking near there) it looked like this there:

I fished on the left side while my friend fished the right. I was using a pumpkinseed senko, but got nothing so i switched to a gulp sinking minnow and got this guy on the first cast:

My friend wasnt catching anything with his mepps so he said he gave up and started playing with a newly bought torpedo lure... he proceeds to catch a bunch of bass with the torpedo:

We then searched the 2 other ponds in that area, 43 and 44, but couldnt manage to get any bites there... so we went back to 45 and caught a few more fish

In total we caught 11 bass, 5 from a gulp sinking minnow in watermelon, 5 from heddon torpedo in firetiger colour, 1 from heddom popn image.

The bass were all little guys, but it was pretty fun. It is a very good place to try out new lures and get confidence with them. I think i will check out the ponds in the richmond hill area to see if i can find something like this there.. i dont have a digital camera though.. so hopefully ill have someone with a camera if i find anything good.

ps if anyone finds a weedless jig head in pumpkinseed on the east shore... you'll know the exact spot where i spilled out my entire tackle box.

I went fishing at this pond on October 9th between around 4:00PM to 5:30PM.

I was curious to see how productive the pond would be during the fall months.

The only lure I used was the green miniking.

I started at the tip of the peninsula, casting west, which during the summer is a hot-spot. On my second cast I hit my first fish, but no more fish after that in the next 5 minutes.

I then began working the whole west portion, and started hitting scattered fish.

After about an hour and a half I got around 12 LM Bass, all around the same size.

Went by this pond last Sunday since I figured it would be even colder downtown, to say the least, when we got there it was very windy. The pond itself looked completely different after all the snow from winter (I should have taken a pic), it almost looked quite desolete, the water had gone down at least 2-3 feet, that whole sand bar area is not even flooded anymore, in-fact the end of it was soo shallow, I started walking around there in my waders, you could see all this gravel where those lilly pads & log was. After about 5-10 of minutes of checking it out it started to rain and we called it a day.

This pond definitely produced last summer. Hope it stays the same this coming up season. It's receiving so much pressure from us few anglers already! We've nailed them left, right and center! Hope it can take it and continue to bring us endless action. Man, I'm itching to catch some topwater bass....come on juneeeee....

Yup, you're right! I was driving by a few days ago and remembered reading your report so decided to check it out just to see... WOW, it sure is different in the spring!

There is one spot in particular that I nailed most of my bass that is now completely exposed! (that spot at the tip of the peninsula)

The water was also very murky.

I'm also very interested to see how the fishing will be this season on this pond.

It will be very interesting to see what effect (if any) our fishing pressure has had on this pond. ;)

I have been/fished this pond too but what I never bother looking for was...

whether there is some sort sewage system linked to this pond? via some pipe or something?
Or is this pond, a Pond? outflow link? only in?

I mean, if the water level is way down, all the different types of fishes must be more packed in certain area? bass attaching smaller fish and etc...

Maybe this is a good time to better understand this location for better? (can it get better?) fish in this pond.

I know that this pond is connected to a creek. That might explain the beaver.

Looking back all the pictures of bass caught not just from this pond but every other ponds you can tell that these basses in hunger. Every bass have flat belly, eh? Sad ;)
They bite our bait in hope for food. Yet bass get tricked by us for entertainment. So sad :D

O well, top of the food chain wins! :D

I noticed that too, but near fall, some had pretty fat bellies...

i think the bass are eating each other actually, i've caught some that had no fins left (or just rags for fins)... i guess the small guys eats flies and stuff and the big guys eat the small ones... maybe in time, there will be much less bass, but bigger ones.

Yeah I noticed that too, in the past when I used to use live worms and had a few leftover at the end of the day, I would usually just toss them in the water for the bass to eat, we did that at hanlan's island (downtown) a few times aswell at the trout pond. I look at it as tho I'm feeding ducks, but instead I'm just feeding the fish :D

Then on the flipside of the coin, I don't really think they're all starving.. like for example, in everyone of those ponds theres schools of minnows for the bass to eat during summer time, on top of bass jumping out of the water to eat bugs. I think its a matter of biomass & diversity, especially when the pond is stacked with a LOT of juvenile (bass), there's bound to be a food shortage. ;) Which is why we get some bass that are normal and others that are a bit skinny. Well thats at least my take on it :D

Nice!

Good to see that the pond is still alive.

Oh and yes, again... belly on those bass are just flat. Sad.
I would like to see them full belly.

Release some live frogs in there or something.
