This is a storm pond located in Markham. It is located in a park on Burr Oak Ave, just east of Kennedy road, between 16th and Major MacKenzie. See map below.

Access to this pond is wide open; As the pond is located in a residential park, all sides can be freely accessed. Here is a view of the pond from "The Bride Walk" on west side of the pond.

I have been to this pond 3 times before without my camera, and each time caught bass. So today I wanted to get a Bass on camera for the report.

Day 1

I was here for about 30 minutes from about 4:30pm to 5:00 pm on August 2, 2006. The temperature was about 32 degrees with the humidex making it feel around 45! I would have stayed longer, but the heat was unbearable!!!

The only lure I used in the brief time I was there was a size 1 Mepps spinner. In the first ten minutes, I caught this little guy and 2 of his brothers.

After 10 minutes I was totally drenched in sweat, so I decided to take off. I put my gear in the car but as I was driving away with my A/C on full blast I figured I would drive to the other side of the pond for 10 more casts. I really wanted to get a bass for the report...

I already knew that this pond has Bass, but I was relieved on the 9th cast to get this little guy. PHOTOGRAPHIC PROOF!!!

Took the pic, packed up, and got back into the comfort of my car with A/C on full blast.

I figured I'd come back when it wasn't so hot...

Day 2

OK, so I got my baby largemouth bass 2 days ago in the blistering heat... that was enough to prove that the pond has bass... But that wasn't good enough for me... I know that there are bigger bass swimming around in that pond, so today I went out for another try with my camera...

I tied on my favourite spinner and took a few casts in the north end of the pond... after a couple of minutes I hooked...a... sunfish DOHHHH!

As I was taking the pic of the sunfish, I noticed some surface activity 20 meters to my left, so I quickly threw the sunfish back in and walked south and casted into that area. BOOM, first cast, a scrappy little fish smacked my spinner... I was thinking, if this is another sunfish, it's a sunfish on steriods... then I pulled it out of the water BINGO... BASS!!!

As I was snapping the pics, I realized that this was no largemouth bass... I had just caught a SMALLMOUTH BASS IN A STORM POND!!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that is definitely a smallmouth bass!

So to end my report, I can now confirm that Markham pond 47 contains sunfish, carp, largemouth bass AND smallmouth bass.

Ahhh the joy of discovery.

I visited this pond on Sunday morning at 9:00 AM, and stayed for an hour. I caught 12 largies. That count doesn't include the two that managed to spit the bait, two feet from shore.

Here's the spinner I used. It's from Dollarama. I get all my spinners from the dollar store now... when I used to lose Mepps or Panther Martin's to a snag, I would almost cry. Now I just turn around, rip open another package, and tie on a replacement without even thinking twice about it. I buy 10 at a time, and they seem to work just fine!

And here's the better half of the fish that were caught.

The other 6 were close in size to the smallest of these. Note that in the two times I've been to this place, I've never caught any sunfish, and only 2 smallmouth bass (one of which was huge). By the way, these were all caught from the west side of the pond.

This place is truly a honey hole, in the middle of a neigbourhood park. What a morning! Great job finding this place, openfire, and thank you so much for sharing!

Tried this pond out from 6-640 with a friend of mine on aug30. I hooked 4 basses but they all shook it off which really annoyed me. My friend caught a pretty big rock bass though, which was suprising. he used a junebug colour yum dinger 4".

This is probably the dirties pond in the world... duck/geese/swan/heron crap everywhere... (we were fishing near that black bridge thing)... i bet u the water is cloudy because thats dried up bird poop swirling around... bird crap must be steriod for fish though considering the rock bass.

went here once. only caught a 3/4 lb lm bass here @~7pm with a white/yellow $rama spinner.

Tried out this pond for an hour or so today. Hooked a few bass but all managed to shake the hook except for this one.

Had lots of fun, it was my first time catching a smallmouth.

Was there on Saturday (around dusk), fished for about 30min, caught a couple bass, most were this size, the odd thing is that we didn't catch any LM bass ? which was quite weird because I know they're there, but maybe this pond is either now pressured or ppl have been taking more fish from here than the other pond. Who knows.

Smallies being caught here more than LM...

If you look at where the pond is located, it's quite possible that ppl are taking fish from this pond. I have heard that this pond used to hold lots of 2 lb + bass just 2 years ago... It doesn't take much for the pond to get fished out especially if ppl are keeping fish. What a shame.
