Something else to add to this topic, I noticed (this year especially) there is quite large number of posts in "report" section that in no way shape or form should qualify as report because they do not have almost no element of what proper report should include. These so called 'reports" are not useful at all . I think this should be implemented much more strictly - and to grant access to report section to a new member only after new member submits proper report, no exceptions.

I've installed some new captcha images that should stop spam-bots from registering. I'll know by tomorrow if it was effective since we've been getting 30 + spam-bot registration per day. I'll give it 24 hours and see if that number decreases.
I will report back tomorrow.

I agree, some softer reports have been approved, but many many more have been disapproved! This will have to be a whole new topic on it's own.

I'm happy to report that we haven't had a single spam-bot registration since I installed the new captcha verification images. (almost 48 hours) That should take care of any new spam-bot registrations, but does nothing about the hundreds of spam-bot accounts that have already been created and just waiting to post spam...

So, now I have to delete a few hundred spam accounts that have been building up over the past few months - I was thinking about deleting the accounts of anyone who has registered but not yet posted. I'm still pondering if I should do this or not. 8)

That is a good news. I was also wondering what is up with frequent appearance of postings where it says only "Sponsor" and nothing else. Perhaps that is related to the same problem ?

i think you should delete ny1 who hasn't posted or updated thir profile, if they really wan't to join again than they will

No, that was unrelated. I installed a few other modifications along with the anti-spam, one was an advertisement modification. After playing with it a bit, I deactivated it all together as I found the sponsor ad to be a little too obtrusive for my liking.

I think this is what I will do.

You'll notice that the member count has changed.

What I ended up doing was deactivating the accounts of everyone who has less than 5 posts and hasn't posted yet this year. That reduced our member count by over a thousand.

Great, thanks Openfire...if we have 208 members then we have 208 kick ass members...yah! Active members is whats important, not some oblivious number.

uh oh, it looks like members are still piling in, those hackers might have figured out how to get in again

No, I don't think so... only 5 new registrations - all legit as far as I can tell. The spam-bots have been stopped dead in their tracks for now, but we shall see what happens going forward.

I agree whole-heartedly.

Heres an idea. if some1 isnt active for a certain number of months they get a warning email reminding them to contribute to the forum. that way ppl are warned before there booted.
