Mono vs braid

Ontario Fishing Forums

Help Support Ontario Fishing Forums:

Ive been using 832 for a few years now. No complaints other then the green slowly disappearing but the guy above turned me onto Power Pro when I got my steelhead rod and think when I swap my line next ill be putting that on. Along with 5ft of Seaguar fluro.

Sounds like I'm the only one who uses straight fluoro religiously.

Invisible.
Not much stretch (Not as stiff as braid, but waaaay less stretch than mono)
Abrasion resistance.
Low memory.

I will never use mono again. I do occasionally use mono-backed braid with a fluoro leader; but for the extra $, I don't find braid really any better than fluoro... maybe on lighter gear?

I love fluorocarbon as well. I use it on my cranking sticks and one of my flippin rods, plus some of my spinning reels. I love how well it casts over standard braid and how invisible it is while fishing for smallies in clear conditions. Currently i have 6lbs - 20lbs in use with most sizes in between.

I use fluro as well, in fact just a couple years ago i used 10 lb fluro for everything, bass, pike, carp, trout, etc. Then i started using 4 lb fluro for bass, (ya i know crazy, lol) then i switched to powerpro in 15 lb test and never looked back! I still use fluro for crappies, panfish, river trout but i use braid more often now, more sensitivity, casts better, no memory, sure its very visible but i mean, bass, pike, musky, walleye, they don't really care, lol. You could also use a fluro leader which i do in 8-10 lbs, or 15 for pike or just a steel leader for musky, this setup even works for great lakes trout and salmon during ice out.

- Trilene XL for all my general fishing needs from 4lb ultra-light spinning gear to 17lb in heavier baitcast gear. Casts as good as a mono can, excellent knot strength, has a some stretch, but has lower memory than a lot of mono in that price class. It's also available everywhere.

- Maxima Ultra Green. Expensive, but the only line I use for steelhead and salmon in 12lb and 15lb. Lower stretch, better sensitivity, ok memory properties, tough stuff, less visible than other monos. Very manageable in a round baitcast reel.

Other mentions:

Big Game: super cheap, low stretch, super tough, but doesn't last as many trips as others and has huge memory. Stiff as wire.

Suffix Elite: Very nice stuff.

I use either 40-50lb braid, either power pro which is my main choice or suffix 832 which i must say is pretty nice aswell
keep in mind you may only need 30lb braid but id go for 50lb over it especially if your using a bait caster to prevent bedding on your reel

i use from 20-80lbs: pp slick8, sufix 832, fireline braid, jerry brown solid, and jerry brown hollow.
fluoro leaders always used.

on the mono end,, i only use Sufix Tritanium which is stupid hard to find now.
either fluoro if on boat, or berkeley big game as shock leaders for casting heavy weights.

I have 15lb green power pro going right now. I like how it casts and is quite slim in diameter. I'm going to tag on fluro leaders going forward and see how it works out. Got done seagur 8lb and 6lb left. Might as well use em.

I don't fish for anything remotely big enough for 50lb braid and no serious coverage that 15lb can't handle.

Mono Trilene xl 12lb, I fish it on a top water rod mostly so Im not yanking hooks from fish....

Seaguar invisx 4-8 lb, On my finesse rod I also use it for leaders (fly and conventional.. generally because I can only use 150 or so of the 200ish yard spool)

Braid 10lb on finesse rod, 20 on reaction/ worm and jig rods (generally with a leader of some sort) and 60 on a flipping stick

I also fish 15lb braid on my salmon pier chucking rod, sometimes with a leader sometimes without... If I am running a leader its generally a mono lead for the stretch...
