So I got my first centrepin on satrurday, along with new waders and boots. I was super excited to go out and try everything out

I went out yesterday on the credit since I knew there was a HUGE sucker patch that can provide me with great practise reeling in fish on the new pin.

My first hour was full of rage and frustration as I could not cast the damn pin further than 2 feet....and the high wind didnt help as it was unpsooling line while I was trying to learn lol

I brought along my spinning rod just in case, and used that for a bit before I gave the pin another try, I managed to get a few good casts but still never fully got the hang of it, I think because its spooled with SO much line that it makes it harder, because the line often just jumps over the pin and causes issues.

Anyways, I kept practicing and had some decent casts, and finally managed to hook a fatty sucker and reel him in. I really enjoyed the process once the fish was on, but i HATE casting the damn thing lol

If anyone has any good videos or tips please please share, I was watching youtube while on the river trying to find a decent video but nothing that great out there.

fish is a fish brother--be proud...center pin-- learn the wallis cast--I learned it as it is tie only cast the assures no line twist...youtube it man---great resource.

Suckers on the pin are a blast!

Best advice is to keep at it. The first few outings it feels very weird, but you'll get used to it.

Try adding more weight with a bigger float for now as it is easier to cast over a light setup.

I remember the first fish I hooked with a pin. I experienced the "knuckle buster." Kept my fingers on the handles as I would with a spinning reel and the salmon I hooked went for a huge run. Felt that for the next few days haha.

keep goin, wallis is a little difficult to learn, but is very useful, also learn the side cast. if all else fails, strip off some line at your feet, and cast it out, and hope it doesn't catch on anything or tangle

Loving the reel 8). You'll eventually get the hang of it. I remember when I got my first centerpin I had no idea how to use it until a poacher during the salmon run showed me how to properly do the wallis cast.

brother the wallis feels great once you learn it---its smooth and poetic--very much like fly fishing hahaha

for your new try on a centerpin. that's one hell of a catch. i'm sure you're not expecting to master it on the first day right? you did great. better than people i know on their first pin. i'm saving money for the okuma raw and a good fenwick float rod.

I'm assuming a shop spooled it for you? They out WAY to much line on. And you called it, for someone learning you need half as much, because when you don't know what you're doing it starts pouring off the sides. I wish someone told me to take a bunch off when I first started. If I was you, take a bunch off, it will help tremendously. As for learning the cast, hands on experience is the best. You must go with guys on the pin that can show you a thing or two?

Thanks for the feedbak and support guys! I just came back from a local lake( 10 min away from my house) , trying to get some more practice in before the opener.

most of the deeper parts were still under thin ice, but I was able to find an open spot...unfortunately while practicing the wallis cast...i hooked on to a tree branch because my rig went sideways due to a crappy cast lol. So i lost my leader (saved the float) and went to the coin store to buy some silver out of sadness haha. Going to go out again tomorrow and practice some more.

The baitshop DID spool it for me, they spooled a full backing and full 10lb mono reel. LOTS OF LINE...so I unspooled like 30 meters or so after I tore my leader on the branch. Hopefully will be easier with less line.

I did manage to catch some nice photos of the lake....haha. Beautiful place, and in the heart of Richmond Hill too!...maybe if someone who lives close can help me learn to cast, ill pay with roe bags :p

Yeah I know...but ive been fishing there for almost 8 years haha. Tons of nice pike...waiting till opener for them.

Just wish i can take out my infaltable boat there...without the cops being called like last year LOL

I'm not sure if the lake is private property or just the land that's around it. very nice picture.

the access and parking are an issue--cops see your car there they are comin in to ticket you..

I saw that link before....and yet hundreds of people are swimming and fishing and walking dogs in that lake/park. Back about 8 years ago...there used to be signs all over the place saying PRIVATE PROPERTY and the sales office was open for business, they even had a security guard walking around the lake mkaing sure no one was tresspassins...my family made friends with him and that was th end of that chapter lol

About 2 years ago, they put up a sign at the sales office entrance bascially outlining that its a public trail and the kinds of activities allowed. It doesnt say no fishing. Also, i TRIED very hard to enter Phillips lake...but that lake is SO surrounded by forest and bush its impossible!!!! I think only that one giant house thats on young has private access to it...lucky bums.

Maybe I'll give the town a call and see WHY i cant fish on the lake...if its due to MNR reasons...then I'll stay away...if its private property BS...i will go just like the hunders of others lol :)

ahh to be young again...GT I have had several run ins with the POPO--at that lake--some fishing related some not...water under the bridge as they say..i just know 2 things its a great lake to fish and its illegal to be ther--good ole LEBOVIC who owns it would drive his bently into the water to chase you down if he saw ya...lol--trust me on this one....
