As some of you know, I have been a Okuma Aventa 1002 advocate from day 1. I got my pin 2 years ago in August. I have fished approx 150 days between salmon run of 2011, fall/spring steel of 11/12, salmon 2012, and fall/winter/spring steel of 12/13. Thats alot of days to be out on one "intro" pin. And I am more than amazed at how it held up. Zero maintenance, zero problems.

At the end of steel season here, a week ago, I got a grain of sand in my pin for laying my reel down at one point. Great. It sounded like I was mixing cement. I went into the shop I respect more than any of the rest, Tightline, and they told me to just take it apart carefully and flush everything out with water. It usually does the trick.

So there I am at home, open it up, flush it all out. Put it back together, It is spinning well again. Until I realize I didn't put it back together properly, and have lost the rubber O-ring. Reel still "functions" but clicker works 25% of the time now and it is a tiny bit loose. For someone who has 43 days out in 2013 alone, something as small as that really pissed me off. NO ONE TO GET MAD AT HERE EXCEPT MYSELF. I recognize that. This is where OKUMA comes in afterwards.

I email Okuma. Tell them all I need is one tiny rubber O-Ring to get my pin running good as new again. I exchange the merits of witty banter in hopes the guy will just send me the one damn piece. I get a response, a WEEK later, simply stating they are unable to send me the part, and my best bet it to deal with some shop in ORILLIA. Which is over an hour from my place. Like hell I am driving the best part of 3 hours round trip to buy a $1 part. Extremely dissatisfied with OKUMA that they wouldnt just hook it up. It's not even the money. I'd have paid 20$ if it meant they would ship it to me, the hassle was over, and my pin was great again.

So I hit the water today with my half ass pin and got way to frustrated way to quick. I did some extensive research, and found this site. http://www.mikesreelrepair.com it has I think every part for every fishing equipment piece out there. Crazy. So I found my Okuma Aventa O-ring for $0.99. Boom. I about about to place my order after this post.

Finally, going to give a shout out to http://www.bocabearings.com as what seems to be the most legitimate company for replacement center pin bearings. I can get the best available, abec7 bearings for my aventa for $30 bucks. So between the 0-ring and 2 bearings, for $31+ship, I am going to have a reel faster than lightning.

After OKUMA screwed me I really started looking at "the next purchase" but you know what? A centerpin is just bearings on a pin. I really can't justify dropping 350 on an islander or 550 on a R2 if I will be just as happy with a $31 upgrade. I'll post as my purchases come in and let you know how it all goes. Good thing steel season is over and this happened when It did, and I have the summer to figure it out.

that sucks dude, sorry to hear about the crappy service.
however, sometimes that extra money you pay is for more than the reel itself. i have a custom-run centerpin and last year i lost the screw cap that holds the spool to the backplate 3 days before i left for nova scotia for an atlantic salmon trip.

i emailed him my dilemma and he overnighted me THREE (3) of the spare pieces and didn't bother invoicing me for the UPS shipment (which i offered to pay)

unfortunately okuma could probably care less about the years-old reel and would in fact prefer you go out and buy a new aventa.

Seems a bit wierd that Okuma would't ship this direct, however I know in seeing thier products they are most likely a channel sales outfit. Meaning you will never find an Okuma store they will have retailers carry thier products and they must bind to that. As well parts in the way they have said toyou they cannot probally falls under authorized service centers.

This kind of sales from a manufacturer ensures everyone eats. Meaning Okuma sells thier product in volumes for heavier discounts which allows thier resellers and authorized service centers to add thier markup to the product and resell to the end user. Essentially its win win for the manufacturer and reseller. Manufacturer can move more product which means more revenue. Re seller is happy they can move thier products to end user and turn a larger profit on these.

I don't agree with a $1 part not being sent out, for the economy its the best way and why we arent suffering like the USA.

hmmm I dont even remember seeing a gasket on my sheffield. I take it apart on the water at least once every trip so there is a good chance that if I had one it is probably long gone....

iJay, I am a business grad, I know how it works.

I actually just emailed the rep back and told him straight up that the customer service is shit and if he won't directly send me that part I am done with Okuma and am going to buy an Islander. Its not like I need bearings from him, or a plate, or a metal spacer, its the one tiniest cheapest mechanical piece to the entire system! a darn rubber o-ring. I grabbed a pack quick at Home Depot (which didn't quite fit), maybe ill just go browse in more detail again.

dude rockeys in oriilia is the bomb. did you even try calling them? they would have sent you the parts C.O.D., or maybe free?. i changed an aventa 1000 to a 1002 and rockeys hooked me up with the sleeve, oring and a bunch of screws.5 bucks. as i was leaving i remembered i needed a clicker spring and asked how much. buddy gave me the part and said not to worry about it .

boca- bocas are cheap asian bearings. do not get the ceramic orange seal abec 7s. that orange rubber seal is in contact with the inner and outer bearing races and basically stops the free spinning. i called to complain about it and the owner of boca recomended the abec 5s with metal sheilds for my application. honestly dude i cant tell the 7s, the 5s or the factory bearings apart in my 3 reels. your best bet is to clean your factory bearings. the guy who makes paine falls reels has a video on youtube on how to do this.

nado- inside your spool should be the 2 bearings, the sleeve, and an o ring between the sleeve and the outer bearing.

wow thanks leakywaders. you actually popped up on other forums when i was googling my problems. Ya, I called rockys, no answer.

I also bitched to Okuma as I mentioned earlier. They are just going to send me the part directly. Finally. I hate that it had to come to be giving them the business first.

And wow, thanks man, I was so close to buying those bearings today. The reviews on them are great though? Possibly fake? Well, if that is the case, I will lay off. Thanks for the help

well okuma finally sent me the O ring, and while I was putting it back together I fixed my clicker. Boom. My reel runs like brand new again! stoked.
