Naming Rivers

Disclaimer - New to river fishing and this forum.

Ok, I have changed what I've written a few times and am still torn. Being new to river fishing I would love to know which rivers are hot and worth looking at....however...I also absolutely agree that stating that a river is hot is going to put unnecessary pressure on it. Being a n00b at this and a Trout virgin, of course I would love to hit a river that would increase the odds of popping that little fish cherry. I don't want specific pools, because I don't mind doing the leg work myself but to be pointed in the right direction is a big plus. LOL...and yes I know, the Trout are running....get out there and find them!

Even as I'm typing this I keep going back and forth.

That's a very good point. I'm actually planning an outing to a river that I knew the name, just didn't realize it was as close to me as it is. It wasn't until a member here suggested it as a reasonably close location that I did the research to find it.

I am not altogether sure about "ownership" of the river however...I would like to get clarification on this. I had always thought whether one owned the land or not it did not allow one to bar anyone from using the river, that they do not have absolute riparian rights...

Anyone want to chime in...property lawyer perhaps???

To give some insight...
I own a home (and a chunk of land) on a river and I do not own that portion of the river. There are laws in place around parking on my property (that includes an idling vehicle). They may access the river (get in the water, not stand on my property) in a timely manner (without parking anywhere on my property)... otherwise it is considered trespassing. Most people are respectful. It all boils down to respect. I am a tad tamer than my husband when it comes to dealing with it...

Buddy... I'm telling you first hand the owner has the rights to the river bottom, my friend was escorted out of there by the cops and the warden, he showed us the deed and my friend thought it was BS so he went back only to be kicked out. I can give you directions so you can ask him yourself, lol.

You are exactly right, apparently the land owner has owned the river for over a hundred years giving him the right to own the river bed, therefor no wading is possible in that stretch unfortunately. The other side is also clearly marked private too with obnoxious 15 foot tall posts with no trespassing signs LOL(also have heard of that shotgun lady ahaha). The river is slowly getting worse and worse with access as places keep getting shutdown... But thanks to c&r only the fishing is definately getting stronger at least based from my experience although the I have noticed a lot more people lately which is why I am against posting river names as well. Even though this system is large, there are few public sections that are getting more popular every year.

Have you talked to NottaDave about this? He told me that he had a similar dispute but with the opposite outcome. A different property, I guess.
I'll have to float thru that area in my canoe to check it out. Want a seat in the bow?? :-D

I'm not sure which cases you are referring to, but they definitely do not own the Notty river bed.

I was just replying to CA87's post about ownership of the water...
I was not referring to this case on the Notty or I would have said "this case"...
There are many cases though where property owners have rights to the river beds, which is the general cases I was referring to...

I think it's ok for a poster to name the river he/she was fishing in as no one owns the river if they want but I would not give details of the location on an open forum...Then again I live in Northwestern Ontario and there is far less pressure on the rivers up here than in Southern Ontario and the GTA...Some folks up here also prefer to say things like I was fishing a Lake Superior trib etc...Which is just fine too! ;-)

add a $5 dollar membership fee---i most certainly would pay it---dont allow people to lurk without it and make it a more exclusive forum. just like a porn site give lurkers or proepective members search a few topis to get a taste--it would certainly weed out alot of people just coming in as a gues to fins spots and would keep the community internally much more tight knit and hush hush, it would also in turn increase funding for prizes for events and for development of the sites useablilty and features---and before you rhyme in tripping out about 5 bucks--if you smoke, or eat fast food every day do not even reply. lol--bottom line the white bucket fisherman will not pay 5 bucks...the guys that have more monry ties up in fishing line than in thier home will certainly pay for all reasons above. also as a byproduct this thread of yes i agree, no i dont, yes i do, no i dont will not continue to be the main event in here. spoken like i true veteran of 2 weeks on the forum..lol

In some cases exceptional cases the land owner also owns the stream bottom. However, that is not the case for navigable waterways, which the Notty definitely is. Otherwise, NVCA would not be able to publish a map showing it as a canoe route. But WATCH OUT!!. The Harper Gov't is about to change the whole definition of navigable waterways to a much narrower one. Does not bode well for fishermen or canoeist. I happen to be both.

This is a major problem and one that will be tucked into the ever growing use of omni-budget bills. I am also an avid canoeist and angler and the navigable waterways act is vital to allowing the public access to our resources.
Of course the Harper Government wants to change this purely for economic reasons.

anyways back to the topic at hand, I am torn on one had a large system naming the river may not matter but on a smaller waterway it is deadly. I think though at this point with some much knowledge on the internet in prior posts on various forums, surely everyone knows or can find out about every stream in Southern Ontario?? Have we addressed the issue too late?

After much thought and careful consideration, the Steelhead and Salmon forum rules have been updated. Please take a minute to review the changes.

Rule #1 has been changed from:

Specific Spots: Disclosing the presence of fish in a specific pool, upstream from the mouth of any river or tributary is not permitted in the publicly viewable general discussion forum. For example, you can say "I had a great day fishing yesterday on Wilmot Creek", but we do not encourage members to say "The fish are stacked up in the pool at the CNR bridge". The latter statement should be relegated to the Tier 1 and Tier 2 reports sections, away from public view.
