Hey guys and gals...

Was hoping to pick up a Centre Pin setup for my brother's birthday.
A complete package.

Could anyone advise? (pro's, cons... reason why you use)
Good mid to high range...

Thanks

good mid to high range? That would be an expensive gift lol

An islander is a good mid range reel that will take a beating. King pin, angler spec and milner reels are also good reel but cost a bit more. Custom reels like frog waters and paine falls are good too

A raven im8 is a good med range rod. the rainshadow xst is a good blank too. The loomis and KP rods are nice but more pricy.

A combe would probably run from 500 and up.

Stream side rods are great for the price but a little heavy unless you go with the feather light which is supper expensive for the brand .. The real they have is not very good by design !! Spins great but needs modification to cast descent

the reel is a very nice reel for that price, spins great but yes it may need a few adjustments but i have cast pretty darn far with one of those reels before, the featherlite, aka: tranquility, is a very nice and light rod, have pulled in everything from coho to king, to steeelie to brown and even specks with that rod its an amazing rod and ounce you try it, you'll understand why its more expensive then most of their rods but still quite a bit cheaper then the so called "mid end rods".

Currently im using a rapala classic drifter centerpin with raven IM8 14' Rod....works like a dream

total cost would run you $280 for the rod and only $170 for the reel. Reel is a beast

I'd make sure that your brother really wants a centre pin outfit before spending close to 500 dollars for one,

I don't know what to classify a good mid to high. If your brother has any idea about centerpins...he knows what he wants...but if he's new to it, a starter would place you on a good budget. streamside rods are good and the price is not high and they are good quality. I bought an 11'6" Streamside for $69 at Alflaherty's (i'm not sure what it costs now) paired it with an okuma raw2 which I bought brand new for $160 (again this is not the cost now) Burnt almost $300 in my pocket to get the complete setup (float, line, leaders...etc)

Fish landed so far...mostly steelhead, browns, 1 coho , 1 atlantic and countless chubs...

I believe Streamside have lightest rods in industrie have you tried their Tranquility rods?

Yes the feather light as I mentioned but expensive for a cheap brand with out a lifetime warranty

even the streamside float (not the tranquility) are just as light as the hmx...for $69 - $89 depending on length....

If I'm going to pay 300+ I want a good name behind it that will stand by there product !! Streamside are every new to the market .. I don't know if I would go with them for a high quality rod long term.. If you already have a good one and looking to expand your collection then sure ..

Maybe I just can't justify spending that much on a relatively untested rod that costs more than a raven or st-croix

Now like 280-340 pending on size
just did a search and they are 180-210 my apologies must have been thinking of they're fly rods

Thanks for the input all.

I agree that if your spending the money... get a brand that has great service (replacement/warranty).
I have heard some of the "Big Names" have fallen in their service standards.

Who would you recommend from personal experience.
*They serviced you quickly... to your satisfaction.

I've always had good service with raven but my cousin owns a tackle shop so I've always dealt with sales rep directly so my experiences may have been better than most but they have a great product none the less

It was checking out your profile page (hoping you are the person in your "profile pic" :)) and noticed you are from Vancouver. Is the steelhead combo going to be used in those big west coast rivers with 20lb. Steelies? If so, I'd go with a decent reel and a rod with some backbone...

he's from toronto as far as I'm concerned lol. the tranquility is an outstanding rod, I've had mine for a couple years now, the guides are big enough, so that it doesn't freeze up in the winter, very light, amazing backbone, best rod ice ever used period

check online for used setups. I am currently running a islander steelheader/stcroix avid that cost me less than 400$
