the weight and build, the handles, i did not like anything about it. :( i am used to more solid heavier reel i guess. i dont think abec 5-7 will change anything except spin time.

Thought you said you wanted a light weight reel? Now the Islander is too light? If that's the case I don't think you'll like the kingpin either. They feel similar, this is just how quality reels are designed and made now..
If you want something that feels more substantial maybe pick up a used Loomis. Those things were solid.

Funny that some of the newer reels have shed weight, the consequence of which is perpetual whining about "balance".....duh....

A good solid reel like the Spahr provides good balance to longer rods 13'+ I also am very impressed with the Amundson Steelheader CP in the range of $200

I guess i will just have to adapt. to a lighter reel once i get once. actually all the new reels i have been handling feel really light. If that angling specialty was slightly lighter without the drag. i would strongly think about it.it was like 11+ OZ

Yeah my stanton is amazing balance with my im8. i can fish with it 9 hours straight with no discomfort and crisp hook sets.. Right now, i am thinking about maybe a milner. hard to get your hands on one in ontario unless someone is selling it second hand.

If the pin is too light and balance is a concern you can always just add weight to the butt of your rod.

true, never thought about that. how would you go about it what would you use as counter balance??

If you already have a rod you can either go to a fishing store and buy a fighting butt that they have in stock and attach it to your rod, get a custom one made for you or just drill into the base of your rod and fill the hole with lead.

Or if you are getting a new rod to go with the new reel have a custom one made and have the builder add weight to the butt of the rod with either a fighting butt or lead.

great...spend a few hundred dollars on a well engineered piece of light graphite and start adding weight to the butt...
don't see the logic...

if you need to balance a longer rod using the reel, and its too light to balance it, try some leadcore as your backing. the weight is in the reel, not the butt of the rod. works pretty good on my 15 ft im6 raven.but you shouldnt need to do that on never rods 13 and under. just an option.

im8 13 foot. dono man, put weight on the reel might mess up the whole start up of it. only reason i want to even buy a reel is a better start up. maybe i learn to follow my float low instead of high tip.

I'm not sure what rod you have but if it does not have a reel seat you can always try moving your reel up or down and that will help a little with balance on a 15'. You can always try adding weight but to be honest, every person I know who has done that has taken the weight off or regrets doing it in the first place. As for upgrading your bearings I believe the Islander reels come with stainless steel Abec 3 bearings. I would use them until they are toast. Obviously Abec 7's are better but realistically new abec 3 shouldn't have any issue with start up, if you have an issue right away I would simply return the reel. After a few months or years of catching fish and bushwacking then maybe replace the bearings if you want.

I use the raven im8 13" with reel seat, none adjustable. pretty light for IM8. My current reel is adcock stanton 4.5" from 2001. person that AS said he can't take out the bearings without destroying it. and since i tried to be engineer and make it better. i think i messed up the spindle. he said i am better off buying a new reel. one i really liked was the AS 4.5 inch for 750 which is out of my budget. my budget is 650 tax included. picture should give you an idea.

For $650 you could find a fantastic reel. Look at Paine Falls reels, they are amazing for the price which I think is around $500. You could always look for a used Angling specialties for around $500-$600. Most of the guys who sell them usually take very good care of the reels since they are so nice.

That is the thing, i always question why would someone sell such great reel. so i rather not really buy second handed. I wanted a frogwater, but he is not making any till fall. not sure about milner, but i think it starts at 600. have not really looked into PF, guy that makes it is such a great guy.

From what i understand there is a pretty long wait for a new PF, and like you say no FWs for a while. trying to find a used one is next to impossible, but can be done. A FW sold on another board in like 9 mins or something. easiest to get is gunna be one of toms Anspec reels. they have them at both locations. a couple others are rivers edge and as CC mentioned spahr. Both from ontario. mike is in the east end i think and john spahr is in barrie. i like the look of the spahr with the finger holes, and the rivers edge that is in development is a neat design. These ones are about the price of an imperial. i have not personally fished them but everyone says good things about them.Worth a look anyway. My long-term plan is to collect these reels made in ontario If you see my Revolution on the creeks you are welcome to take it for a "spin". if you want a second opinion on you stanton, try wayne from canada fishing reels. i think he has done bearings on the adcocks. maybe not but an email is not much effort.

nick my 15 is a raven im 6. tip heavy buggy whip. .. without the ballance its hard to keep the tip up all day. if i put the revo on it its better, but i dont use it much so its got an okuma with abec 7 hybrids in it. for sure a slighly heavier reel with the weight in the backplate instead of on the spool would be be better, but its only a part timer.

I also am very impressed with the Amundson Steelheader CP in the range of $200

took a buddy into gags the other day and they are pushing that reel in a combo set up with some Amundson rod, whole set up 300 as I remember.

Youre the Amundson guy you know best. But when ever I see/hear of combos... I assume it can't be of the greatest quality -- not to say this particular instance isn't.

Klik come out tomorrow I'll show you what I have and with any luck how it handles the beasts

Whats the difference in using a heavier reel to balance it? You are adding weight to the butt which changes the tipping point, you arent adding weight to the entire rod. A quality light rod would require less weight to balance it and change the tipping point.

As I said it's a matter of "logic" ... as for the Amund combo, they are generally designed as entry level set-ups (mid-range) for those not sure about wanting to invest close to a $1000 for a float rig, or, want to introduce their children to the art of float fishing. It's a really good pricem for a decent set-up...I tested this combo on the river and reviewed it for Amundson...I have to say that I was quite impressed by the rod. Currently I'm field testing the Laredo IM8 13.5 foot rod with movable reel seat (a really nice rod also which, for those of us winter steelheaders, has a thiner diameter rubber composite handle which allows for handling the rod and reel with winter gloves).
