I heard from my bro last night that we have to take some competency test even for our Electric canoe set up and some other test for our 9.9 boat.

Anyone know if thats true or not?

Last year I was sure they said as long as it was 9.9 or less no licence required but now they say u need one for something as small as a trolling motor mounted on a canoe?

Need some clarification if anyone can please?

I'm glad I got mine a few years ago...however, the card is falling apart already.

Better go get it YAWN, the fine is $250 without license.

TX frozenfire, sounds like a money grab just like the fishing license. I guess another expense added to the fishing tab!

Has spots for 5 stickers but expires after 3 years so instead of the 12 bux renewal it was 20+ for a new card can anyone see the logic in that other than a money grab?

You know, i've always wondered about that fishing license too...

Yup, just a money grab. Hopefully the money is going towards conservation and whatnot like they say it is.

Money grab for sure, the test is too easy that anyone can pass it simple multiple choice Qs. I remember 1 Q being a pic of PFDs and choosing which one is suitable to use ie, 1 damaged one, etc...LOL

The test is pretty easy. they offer a great tutorial, I've only being a boat a few times i just passed now i need real lessons

Hey Everyone!!!

I checked a LOT of sites who offer the "Tutorials" so you can write your exam at "Transport Canada".

One of the ones I stayed away from had a Picture of a Boat and all the Terms related to a Boat i.e. Bow, Stern, Transom, etc. EXCEPT Their picture showed the "BEAM" as being the 2 points farthest from each other, on the sides ....UNDERWATER??? DUH!!!!

The best one I found was "Boater Exam.com" . It's broken down into 5 Chapters with with Quizzes in each Chapter and a 10 Question "Quiz" after each Chapter that you MUST pass or you repeat the Chapter.Three Hours of study time is required, which is not hard to do. Bob Izumi was Pictured on there when I started but seems to have Disappeared.

I finished the "Tutorial" and was given an On Line Breakdown of the Exam at "Transport Canada" and a Link to proceed there to Write The Exam.

EXCEPT the Info there (On Line) was NOT the same as the Info they sent me in my "Congratulations You've passed The Boater Exam Safety Course" Personal e-mail.

On Line
they said I had 30 Days ONLY in which to write the Exam. E-mail said I had One Year to do that. E-Mail said I had a time limit Per Question of 1.5 Minutes. On Line was silent on that Point.

I sent them an e-mail bringing these Points to their attention. Their Reply was that Transport Canada had removed those 2 Restrictions. "It seems we did not update our automatic e mails when those restrictions where removed". Oh Really????

SO! Bottom Line as it stands NOW is: 1- The exam is 50 Mutiple Choice Questions. 2- You must get 75% or 38 out of 50 Correct to Pass. 3- The Test is One Hour and Fifteen Minutes Long. 4- There is NO Time Limit Per Question. 5- You have ONE Year from Passing the "ONline Boating Safety Course" to write the Exam.

There are also Other Conditions in the event that you might Fail The Exam. You write (Do) The Exam on your own Computer, no one looking over your shoulder, and it's "Open Book".

I'd Highly recommend that you prepare some "Reference Cards" i.e. ALL The Buoys, Types and what they mean. "Right Of Way" (Rules Of The Road) Who gives way to who and under what circumstances. Hypothermia, Carbon Monoxide Poisoning, Age Restrictions for ALL Types of Watercraft, Safety and ALL Warning Equipment and Signals, HOMELAND Security Rules, Weather Warnings and their Meanings Etc. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Of course if you have a Photographic Memory you won't need any of that. ...

I THINK I paid $49.95 + Tax for the Course but I'm not Positive. I can't check right now or I'll blow all this away. I'll try an EDIT with a LINK to Boater Exam .com

Back in a Bit.

Rick

EDIT: Point Of Clarification: This is all about Obtaing Your "Pleasure Craft Operators Card". It has Nothing to do with a "Pleasure Craft Licence" or a "Fishing Licence" !!

1- The Price I stated above is Correct.

2- Their is a
$25.00 Fine for Operating a Pleasure Craft without a Card.

3- ALL & ANY Boats with Any Kind of a Motor are Required to have the Card.

4- The Card and ALL Regulations applied thereto are "FEDERAL LAWS". The Card is Legal to use in ALL Provinces.

5- There is NO "Age Exemption" OR "Grandfather Clause".

6- A Persons AGE has a Bearing on what Type of Pleasure Craft He/She may Operate. Including "Personal Watercraft"

7. If you should choose to do so this is
The Link To "Boater Exam.com" http://www.boaterexam.com/canada/

That's it Folks. Good Luck if you're going to write the Exam! (Like ME!!! ....LOL...)

Rick
