I am considering getting a new digital camera. Some of the features that interest me are having more that a 3X zoom, antishake technology, and a wide angle lens ( the equivalent of a 28mm SLR lens). I don't really care much about the megapixal size and was wondering what you would recommend?

What type of digital camera are you looking for ?

Well... since you have said something equavalent of SLR in lens... I am guessing you want a Point & Shoot type.

IF I were in the market to buy a new digital camera...

I would totally buy this...

Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/prodde ... &langid=EN
Awesome price too!

Here are the reviews...

So visit Futureshop before sale ends and have a look at it.

Also, make sure you DO NOT! buy memory card from Futureshop BUT goto a computer store and buy them as they are super cheap these days. Get yourself a 4GB memory card for under $20. You can take so much pictures that the battery will run out before you run out of space.

Now if you don't need something small and thin like Canon SD1100 IS
but want slightly more zoom and features... even if camera is little larger...

I personally would buy...
Canon PowerShot S5 IS 8MP camera.

Yeah that is a good price, but I would prefer a wider angle lens than that one, for taking pictures in tight spaces. I also like the idea of any antishake system for a greater chance of clear pictures. I haven't checked out the price of flash cards lately and 20.00 sound amazing for that much storage.

Well...

You won't be able to find any point and shot camera with wide angle.
UNLESS... you buy one of the Canon PowerShot series which does allow to use Canon's lens adapters for PowerShots only.

if you're looking for something with anti-shake technology, IS - image stability is what you're looking for. i must say, it makes a HUGE difference.

it's true what mikeymikey said. don't buy memory cards from futureshop. i've purchased a 2gb sandisk sd card from dell (online) for $14.99. this was probably a year or two ago so imagine the prices now. one thing you'll have to check is what the max. memory capacity is of the camera you buy. i think cameras that use compact flash give more leeway in terms of more memory. a lot of point and shoots that use sd cards can only take up to a 2gb card. however, 1gb or 2gb is more than sufficient unless you are taking many videos.

the sd1100 is not bad at all. my brother purchased it recently and is happy with it. i don't remember if it has a battery meter or not but the more recent canon models have it now =D.

the "s" series that mikeymikey suggested is excellent if you're looking for something inbetween a point and shoot and a DSLR.

i would suggest a visit to henry's. you can 'use' the cameras unlike at futureshop or best buy where you can only view it as an object instead of seeing what it can produce.

With respect to teh memory card, also check the write speed of the card. 2 cards with identical storage capacity by the same manufacturer could be priced totally differently because of different write speeds. If you want to be able to take quick shots in succession, then this should be considered as well. If not, then don't worry about it too much.

I can remember buying a 256 card and paying 200.00 a few year ago. It's crazy how much the prices have dropped.
The anti shake technology I think is important and will give a lot more useful pictures in the end. Most of the point and shoot cameras have a lens that is the equivalent of a 35mm slr lens. Some of the point and shoot cameras have the equivalent of a 28mm lens. This difference in lens is significant when shooting in tight spaces like indoor shoots and group pictures.
