Ok, so I've finally reached my goal for saving for a new float rod over the winter.

I've decided on getting a 15'.

I've pretty much narrowed it down to either a GLX or CTS , but am still open to other options....

Has anyone here fished both rods?

Opinions welcome.

What type of water are you usually fishing? Makes a big difference
Also what size leader do you typically run and what brand?

CTS will most likely end up being more expensive than the loomis depending on what components you get.

I also have a friend who's selling a 15' GLX with a custom handle. PM and I can give you his contact info.

I would suggest a 13'6" CTS 4-8lb, Very fast action and more than enough power to handle any river in ontario. The CTS will cost more than the GLX if you get decent components on it. But overall it is a better rod. If you are looking for a builder I would suggest John from JC tackle. I was in his shop about 2 hours ago....amazing work!!!

Also recommend the 13'6, had one built in the fall and love it. It's a little too much for the Lake Ontario east tributaries, but for bigger flows the rod is awesome. Never felt undergunned with it.

Another good builder I recommend is Chris from Hamilton. On the float board his alias is RCG. Great work and honest guy.

there is also a CTS 3-6 which would be a great creek rod.

15' is way too much rod for anything outside the grand, notty and saugeen

i've got an 11'6 i like it, its fine for most rivers, but on some im wishing i went for a 13'

I own a 15 and use it regularly cause I tend to fish big water, but if this is a thing you do then it will be indispensible. I couldnt imagine going back to a 13 since trying. Lots of big water up north. However, if you fish the ditches more frequently than large water, a 13 is the way to go.

I already have a 13' rod that I will still do most of my fishing with. Its a good length for most of the spots I fish and its cheaper so I don't mind bush whacking or using it for salmon. I don't fish any of these smaller "ditch" type tribs I often hear people talking about....

The 15' I want specifically for fishing the big, wide lower sections of my local river that I spend 90% of my time on. Its pretty rare that I will drop below a 6lb lead. I think the extra length will really shine on a couple of the runs I like to fish where I have a harder time keeping the line off the water with my 13'.

As for custom fancy stuff for the rod, can't say I really much care for that type of stuff. I want a rod for fishing not for getting compliments from the guys on the river. I originally wanted to just get the a 15' CTS built but I think it will be less hassle to just order the GLX right to my door and not have to deal with getting one built or driving a couple hours to pick it up etc. From what I was quoted to have the CTS built the price will be pretty close to a factory GLX.

So far though it sounds like the CTS will be a better rod.

Just mulling it over here... Alot of bread to drop on a rod.

Thanks for the replies. :)

The 15' CTS would be good on larger faster flows where a lot of power for turning fish is essential, I still think its overkill for almost everything in Ontario other than a few key places. I blew up #6 Drennan on it a few times, that saying a lot considering it's true breaking strength is 8-9lb. And this is the 15' 4-8 i'm talking about, can't imagine what the 6-10 would be like. Do yourself a favour, get the GLX its noticeably less tip heavy then the CTS, protects lighter leads, it's more durable, and you don't have to worry about getting it tied up. Not a fan the rest of the GLX line up, but Loomis got it right with their 15' imo. Check out the float board RiverNinja has one for sale, beautiful looking thing, at a good price.

The GLX is a moderate action rod (less backbone) than the CTS, if you are going to fish big water and fast flows than you would be at a disadvantage with the GLX especially if you fish heavier leaders. IMO if you are going to spend $700+ on a rod then get exactly what you want. Sure it may take a bit of time to get tied up but it's worth it.

Thanks you've pretty much got me sold on the GLX.

Where I fish the river is wide but I wouldn't really consider it super fast. Thanks for helping me make up my mind.

Oh and I saw that custom GLX for sale over on the float board. Nice rod but too fancy for my clumsyness. Thinking of going straight cork sliding rings so I can adjust reel position for comfort/balance.

which power GLX are you going with?

Before you make your purchase I would suggest talking to John from JC tackle, he is a custom rod builder and is probably the one of the best rod builders in the country. His knowledge is second to none, he can give you his honest opinion on both the GLX and the CTS, here is his email, [email protected]
