Thinking of going straight cork sliding rings so I can adjust reel position for comfort/balance.

Good idea, I build most my rods up with sliding rings for that same reason, I like to change reel positions depending what kind of water i'm fishing. Goodluck with the rod, i'm sure you'll like it.

Old carp match rods and spey conversions. I know a guy who fishes one religiously, bloody heavy, but the bend in that thing when loaded up can put a smile on your face.
