Thought it was time I got myself a new light tackle set up, so after a bit of research I picked up...

a Berkley Lightning 6'6" ML spin rod (SH662ML)
http://www.berkley-f...tning-rod-shock
and a Mitchell Avocet II Gold reel
http://www.fishmitch...cet%20II%20Gold
for well under 100 bucks for the pair.

Fishes awesome! It has a nice balance to it, great bite sensitivity and lots of power. Bagged a bunch of decent sized Black Crappies and a young pike from around the OP docks and pylons on the first try out.

I think this is a great little combo for well under a hundred bucks.

I have to agree with you on the reel. I have it on a Bass Pro their own brand solid carbon tip 7'6" UL. The reel is so smooth and my rod has enough backbone to it. I got 4lb BPS Tourny Tough line. It's fought 2 8lb sheepsheads, loads of fun b/c of it's sensitivity. The Avocet is such a great reel. That line seems to not have any memory, from what I have seen.

OP docks?

Hope to see the fish you catch with it. Post some pics....lol. Congrats.

OP docks and pylons....Ontario Place.

and yeah....It has been mentioned more than once that I desperately need to get a camera!!

Looks like a great combo!
Congrats Mike.
Your going to get 1000+ beauties with this setup.

I've had a Mitchell Gold Avocet2 for about 9months now.
Great reel.

There is one thing I noticed, and so did another fisherman that had one as well.
The handle (Screw/tightener/holder) comes a little loose.

Let me know if yours does as well.

ps: landed a 30+ Salmon last week with the Mitchell & ML Fenwick Rod. (6lb Cajun line).
No problems.

I figured that since I was doing so much fishing along the harbourfront / islands and Ontario place I should get a decent setup to match it. The mitchell got rave reviews onine for its price. I have flipped the handle on to the other side(lefty) so I'll keep an eye on it. thanks for the tip!

I never noticed or checked my Avocet. One of my Abu Garcia did come loose and was ready to drop off. I just put a drop of blue Threadlocker on all my reels just to be safe. Don't use the red Threadlocker, red is permanent it will never come off. Thanks Blair.

30 salmon on 6lb line and what sounds like a 6 or 7' rod? Sounds like a fish tale, im gonna need some pics to believe it. lol

Edit: just realized it was a 30lb fish not 30+ fish lol, sounds more believable now lol Sometimes they dont run as hard and are alot more cooperative. I hooked one with 12lb main and 8lb lead on a 13' rod and couldnt turn it for the life of me. Hooked others that just chilled at the pool for most of the fight until they suddenly turned on.

Dont have pic of the "big one" ... but this hen was caught the same day at the same pool

same set up (7ft ML rod & Mitchell with 6 lb)
I tryin for the bows hangin out behind them and ended up with salmon all day!

They just stayed in the pool going round and round ... I had decided if they shot out the shallows and down river, i'd just break it off.
But they didnt

*SMILES*

No one else was fishing the right pool (One side of Bridge) so I had lots of time to play them.
Let both go
