hey bud it was good to see you out there!
would have replied sooner but busy busy

howd you make out that day? we ended up moving out due to how slow it was that day

about your nymphing question. i find if you dont see fish rising try nymphs. if you see them goin up go for dries.
sometimes emergers are good if they are not rising but wont hit nymphs but im still not too experienced with those yet

hope to see you on the water again bud
cheers

Hey!

That day was slow for me too. After we talked, I fished for another 30 min and had to go. I caught 3 I think.

Yesterday I went out to another river, caught a dozen small rainbows. Nymph and dry. It was a lot of fun!

I will see you around ;)

My first nice brown on the fly !

congrats man! beauty for a first

color is a bit interesting. bit too dark for the waters we usually see each other..
was it somewhere else? or maybe just the photo.

either way congrats bro! i remember when you were here not knowing anything and asking lots of questions lol
now you got rainbows and browns all on your belt like a pro lol

whats next? ;)

Thanks Shmogley!

It was actually 200 m downstream from where we met last time ! One of those nice curves with deep pool ;)

I wanted to go today again, but I decided not to. Is it too warm right now for targeting trout or is it still good ? I really need to buy a thermometer

See you around ! Let me know if you wanna go some days

It should still be ok, not too hot out yet. You'll catch fish but you have to be more careful handling them when that water warms up, less dissolved oxygen in the water means they can't stay out of it for as long. Nice fish BTW!

dont forget bass on the lower ;) quite fun when trout gets slow

Oh god had the worse day fishing for a long time.

Morning drop my phone in water. RIP.
Afternoon realized when back to the car that i left the keys inside, and all doors are lock. With cellphone and all, in middle of nowhere ... RIP window.

Good news is I am going to BC and AB. So I need to plan if i want to take some days of for a Banff trip or a BC trip (maybe Vancouver Island).
Suggestions ?

Back from my trip. Ended doing one day on the bow river just south of Calgary, and one day in the mountains near Canmore. It was awesome!
I just need to find a way to get a job there haha!

For the long week end I was thinking going on a river / creek of GB or Huron. Anybody went recently around there and have an idea of conditions. I am very much after trout. I would appreciate a PM with conditions! :)

Spent the day on rivers and creeks of GB!
There are some awesome waters.

If anyone want some report/conditions feel free to PM.

Busy week end!
Met two folks on a scenic river. But water was high and I got nothing! At least was nice to see the water running that fast!

I never really tried to target Salmon or Steelhead. But I am thinking to give it a try.
Usually shy of crowd, for me fishing is about spending some time alone or with friend. But not shoulder to shoulder. That's why I am not sure that Salmon / Steelhead is for me.

Anyway, the only rod I have for those is a 9ft, 6-7wt. I think it's good enough to give it a try?
Or should I get a cheap 8 or 9 wt?

In the case someone is looking to teach a padawan some salmon/steelhead fishing, I would be happy to go on the water for a day with someone more experienced !

the 6-7 will be ok for steelhead. King salmon will break that though.

try nymphing with an egg pattern bounced along bottom under an indicator. you will slay the steelhead its the best way to get started on them with the gear you have already. Stay away from the busy pools, like dennys dam, single hand rods wont do you well in that pool, you can move downstream and find a little run with no one in it. Personally i'm not a fan of the shoulder to shoulder my self, but in Ontario we are lucky to have MANY rivers that are very long, lots of room, lots of pools/runs. just find yourself a private little spot, thats how i roll.

Thanks TCP for the tips!

Quick question: Trout season ends in September. After that, if I want to fish for steelhead, the odds that I catch a trout are still quite high aren't they?

Any trout that you catch in the open stretches will be smolts, meaning baby steelhead and migratory browns. Steelhead are also closed after September in most places, that's when you have to look at the "additional fishing oppertunities" section of the regs to find open water.

I'm shooting from the hip here, but since steelhead is really trout then as of October 1st it really means that it's mandatory release, but anglers are still able to target them ? I never target fish out of season so how does this get squared with the regulations or is fall/winter season steelhead fishing only available in the extended season waters ?

You got it, you can only target them in the extended season waters.
