New to the Pine / Notty Rivers

Good afternoon folks,

So I have recently moved to Beautiful CFB Borden Ontario from Halifax N.S. I recently purchased a new switch rod to practice my speycasting before I return to the Cape Breton for the salmon runs in Aug. I have a few question about the Notty and the Pine that I hope some people can clarify or guide me in the right direction (I am not looking for locations, I have already scouted a couple nice locations). First of all, both the Pine River and the Notty are quite muddy and i was wondering if it usually clears up a bit after the melts or am I looking at consistently fishing while not being able to ever see the bottom. I am also new to steelhead and was wondering if they still make their way up river in these murky conditions. Finally, I have spend a considerable amount of time swinging streamers and nymphing egg patterns in the last two(2) weeks to no avail in the Pine. I know they have some salmon runs on the pine later in the season, but do they actually have steelhead runs going through the Pine River or would be efforts be better rewarded on the Notty for steelhead.

the pine has both steelies and salmon, they don't go in for an long time but the time they do come in, you can usually walk across the backs of fish, its a tough river to figure out but ounce you do, it can be a very producing river. As for the notty right now, all i do is bottom bounce with roe with a few float eggs in the sack, with a 6-8 pound leader, they're not too tough to get on the nitty, the pine can be different though.

yes the notty will clear up more but it will still have a stain to it by it s xxxxxxxxlet for steels in fall and spring i float for them 4 to 6 pound leader it a nice river i love it good luck

go up further in the headwaters for better conditions, the area around borden and angus flows through clay and stays dirty for a long time...

Headwaters is where u should be at. All the fishes have pushed up way upstream. Waiting for the right temps to drop their eggs.

Pine clears fast Notty stays pretty dirty for quite some time. Seeing as how you are military, I'm assuming? You have access to some pretty awesome spots on base that don't see much traffic. Lots of steelhead in the pine right now keep trying what you have been doing. The water has been stupid high this spring which is probably why you haven't had much luck.

you can get a pass to fish on the base in angus, one of the best spots, if you get the run at the right time, you will se hundreds of fish, both in the fall and spring and almost no pressure!

Thanks for all the useful information. Probably going to start exploring a river a weekend to see whats in the local area, getting tired of losing flies on hidden stumps in the pine and the lack of wading oppertunities.

not sure what you're talking about but the pine is a very wadeable river, as long as you're in the right spots.

The areas near Borden are not very wide so there is no real requirements to wade it. Finally saw a Steelhead for the first time yesterday and the water is getting a little clearer but this rain might change that

if you can get into the base, the areas there are retry wide, the pipes are good if you can get in, if theres a run, you will se hundreds of them.
