since i just started fly fishing in the the spring, and haven't perfected the fly cast yet (can roll cast like a champ) just wondering if it would be better to use a line thats 1 wt heavier than the rod for easier casting

ya i was reading something the other day that it helps shooting line by going one wt heavier line it wont hurt anything i dont do it but i do know people who do it

my 6wt is overweighted atm, but only because i had my grandpas old 7wt, had some line given to me, then a new 6wt found its way into my hands, so the line came with it

Hey Mad

How can you tell the wt of a line from looking at it or measuring it? My first fly rod is a kit but it came with cortland line. Since the rod is a 6/7wt I don't know what line is on there, is it 6, 7 or could it be 8. I figure it's good line so I could keep the line and get a newer better rod. What you think?

It's almost impossible to tell just by looking the only way to have some idea is to cast it on if it's a 6/7 there half wt lines from what I know so ya you could use it best on a 6 wt or I know of a few fly fishing swaps in the spring and early summer where you can probley pick up on for fairly cheep I have picked up a few lines from these swaps and all be it there used there are still in great condition I have picked up a few rods as well

Cool now have to wait till spring. The rod is heavy to hold and feels kinda light for the line, takes alot of effort to cast. It's no where as nice as my Fenwick but then that's like apples and oranges.

Hey Mad

We're meeting up tomorrow at the same place where you taught schnip to cast. You free tomorrow? Meet there at 10 or if you want to come earlier. Angler_Brazil, schnip, dsukh, me and later on MichaelAngleo will be there.

NP, I saw in another thread you got a job, congrats. Very tough finding something decent that's not min wage. Crap jobs with crap pay. The economy will never recover like that. Death spiral.

We'll try to meet up some other time. Hopefully by then I'll tie up lots of flies.....lol.

sounds good and thanks this is a crap job but there is room to move up hopefuly fast i have a few courses to do but i will see what happens

I use the manufacturers weight gradations as a starting point to then custom fashion my rig for specific conditions. Ive recently been using some SA steelhead # 8 on a fast action T&T 10 foot and found I could fire some bomber distances compared to the # 7 line I spooled last season, however once I started using heavy or long sink tips with larger or heavy dressed spey flies it was difficult to haul all this weight up and out properly .Once I shortened my leaders(and sink tips) used sparsely dressed flies ,my timing and distance was manageable .If your rod is a fast action you will find the upsizeing no problem in some circumstances. Some older ...slower action rods once fully loaded with the heavier upsized line do not have the power then to fire well.

yea, this is going to be for my loomis nrx 9ft 8wt, i've got 8wt line on there now, but i find it just doesn't cast as well as my ross rx 6wt with 7wt line

i would try going to the 9 wt line then i was reading a few weeks ago that one of the g loomis pro staff goes up a line wt to add in casting and hes a master casting instructor so thats what i would do also can you double haul when you cast that might help as well it helps load your line faster

chase what can of line do you use on your two handers im running the rio switch line on my switch rod but i wanted something with a shorter head i was thinking a skagit line but dont know alot about it was wondering if you did

been reading a lot about that skagit line since we talked about spey casting, seems like an intriguing adventure

Skagit short shooting heads (20') will work well with lighter switch rods...in particular when married to fast sinking tips for larger flies such as an intruder....
Hope this helps
