from some of the diagrams it looks like you still have to attach it to a running line??? slightly confused
 
ya you do you run a main line to your shooting head the shooting head is heavier and has a thicker diameter then the running line so when you cast it helps give the line more power and more distance
 
You buy a running line you can't use any fly line that's I bought the rio switch line because the shooting head is built in to the main line but the shooting head is 40 feet long and I want something alittle shorter so I will look in to the rio skagit line I think and just put it on a spare spool
 
it all depends where you fish, if you are making long casts no need to go heavy.
if you need to cast shorter distances heavier line will be better.
basically for perfect cast you need to load the rod. all fly lines have different weight.
so if you are fishing narrow streams and not using long line, you will have less weight and it will be harder to load the rod for a cast.
you can cheat by choosing heavier line; this way you will load the rod with less line out.

having extra spool with heavier line helps in these situations.
