well, went out fishin the other day, it was quite gorgeous out. sun was shining, very calm breeze... and of course... the bugs were out in full force! me and ashley went out to our little spot on chippewa creek in search of some panfish! bite, was slow to say the least. i dropped my line in and rite away landed a very small pumpkinseed, then another one on the next cast, a bit bigger. beautiful colors on both fish, so bright and vibrant.

i then moved over to the other side of the river to some deeper water to try and locate some crappies. water levels had dropped about 7 inches in about a week and a half. after lookin around a bit, i seen a stick just poking out of the water, told ashley i was gonna get a fish off that stick... sure enough, first cast... crappie takes the bait! pull him in and pose for a quick picture. ashley took it from the other side of the river. lol.

after breakin off my line... i tried for some pike, without any takers, and upon losing 3 more lures gave up and went back to the pannies. as i;m at the truck tying a new rig together... ashley screams... well, turns out a snake crossed her path, so i went over and caught it. it was a black rat snake. the largest snake in ontario, and a threatened species. one of 3 constrictors we have in ontario. of the 17 snake species in ontario, 11 of them are listed as threatened. very sad indeed, as a snake lover, i encourage everyone to allow any snakes they come across to continue on their way without harm. they are harmless to us, only 1 venomous species lives in ontario, and that is the massassauga rattlesnake, very few remain, it is an endangered species as well.

now, after that little show, we got back to fishing. i landed another small crappie near a tree in some slow current.

and before we left due to the crowd that moved in, ashely hooked into her PB largemouth bass. i'll get her into some bigger ones when the season opens! all fish were caught on a float rig, fished 8-10 inches down with a Gulp! 2" minnow.

we left that area and went to dunnville to another small creek that flows into the grand river. fished the area with a small spinner and hooked to OOS largies and ashley managed a couple small bluegills. sorry, left the camera in the truck for those ones!

ya great pics, looks like it would be a good spot for an ultra light, would be alot of fun im sure. Whats the area like as far as parking ect. Is it easy to find?
Im interested in finding a nice spot for pike this year, and as long as theirs little fish around they should be plentiful.
Chris

Sweet pics! Looks like a solid time panning!

Great message about our black rat snakes too, not only are they beautiful and impressive animals but they're the best pest control you can ask for. A bunch like in my grandparent's woodshed and you never notice them (except the occassional rattlijng and the massive 6foot + skinds they leave behind).

YEP! Them Little Fishes are always a Hooter  ...Sorry,... Hoot To Fish For!!

PS: Who Would of Thunk that reviving a 5 year Old Post could be this Much FUN!!

Snakes are indeed beautiful creatures. I have had "pet" Boas in the past and baby-sat a 360 lb Anaconda for 9 months.
I'm sure the statue of limitations has run out, but 32 years ago I did an outdoor survival thing. I was dropped off in the woods 100 miles from Temagami. I had to make my way back to the hiway. Survivor-Man.
One of the things I captured and ate was a Massauga. I also dined on squirrels and suckers during those 8 days.
It was quite the experience.

Alfie.

Wow 360 lbs! That is beyond me, my friend! Your survival adventure sounds pretty cool. How'd you kill the massauga? What stuff did you take? Cheers.

That's my favourite place to fish. Whenever i say 'i went fishing at my local bass hole' that's where i mean :D
