PIKE- Best lures for PIKE

I prefer Mepps type spinners over large spoons, because I have seen pike grab a spoon, pause, and spit it out without getting hooked too many times. They grab from the side, and can avoid the treble, whereas they tend to inhale a Mepps because it's smaller.

This year with its tough conditions(cold rain) large tubes specially rigged with a wire leader have been winning me over. They have been consistantly taking the bigger pike of the day over cranks and spinnerbaits. Go 4.5" tubes!! I had on a nice 6-7 pound pike a few days ago when cranks/spinners/spinnerbaits were failing to produce hammer a tube, i fought it to the boat and he shook off....i gave it a slight lift and drop and the bugger did a 180 and hammered it again. I failed to set the 3/0 hook with the light rod i was using.(6 lb test trilene big game and med light abu garcia)

Last summer my wife caught a pike that was 27". It had a 12" walleye in its belly. Not sure what it was doing chasing a #3 Mepps spinner at that point... when we opened its mouth, we could see the tail of the walleye sticking out its throat. I pulled the walleye out with a pair of pliers - go figger!

did you eat the walleye too?

well on the shallower parts of the lake with heavy grass a jidder bug is a great lure for pike that other aren't too aware of. another great one is a blue fox size 4 spinner bait, they work really well and both pike and musky go crazy for them. another great spinner bait for pike fishing is the booyah pikee spinner bait. the pike also like a wide variety of swim baits. look at the lake's native species (I'm not too sure of it) and get swim baits matching the appearance of the native fish that pike feed on (walleye, perch, and in some cases feel free to try a baby pike swim bait). pike are also large predators so don't be afraid to test out larger baits. from my experience i have seen cases where pike would feed on fish not much smaller then itself.

hope this helps - Nick
