Hey OFF,

Wanted to share an interesting story that might also serve as a word of warning for all of you pike anglers...

Last summer I was fishing my lake around 8am on a Tuesday morning in August when a hooked onto an awesome pike. I don't often fish alone but this time it was midweek and my fishing buddies had all gone home to the city. I managed to net the fish and get it onto my boat with relative ease and it turned out to be one of the bigger pike I caught last summer (36" 8lb). I wanted to get a measurement so I put two fingers behind the gill plate and lifted it out of the net. Before I could set it on my tape, the pike thrashed and I managed to take one of its larger front teeth deep into my thumb. I was wearing those cheaper berkley gloves with the black rubber palm and they were no help. Without seeing the damage, and with blood dripping down my arm, I quickly released the fish and took off my gloves. The bite was deep enough that it had punctured the pad of my finger and I could see the deep tissue within the puncture. I called it a day and took the boat home where I bandaged up my thumb and went back on the water that night.

Here's where it get's crazy....

4 months later the cut had healed on the surface but I could still feel hard tissue below. One night I tried massaging it out to get rid of the discomfort....the next morning I woke up and my thumb had swelled to twice the size. I saw the doctor and took oral antibiotics but nothing worked. Then 2 days later I had to rush to the hospital with a fully swollen hand and a red line traveling up my arm (remember this bite happened 4 months ago!). The ER doctor told me if I had waited another day I could have lost my entire hand. I was told I had tenosynovitus and spent the next 7 days on a constant IV drip and couldn't go to work...all because of one big slimy pike who had no patience!

There's a few valuable lessons I learned:
1. Pike have big sharp teeth
2. Be extra careful when fishing for monsters alone
3. Keep a first aid kit (w alcohol swabs) in the boat
4. One way or another, fish will get their revenge!

Needless to say, I can't wait for May 16th and another season of pike fishing!

Lol awesome story to start the day, laughing with you; not at you.
:D
haha feel free to laugh at me. It wasn't funny at the time but I get a good laugh now that I'm on the other side of it. Hell of a scare though. Will be more careful/prepared this season. ;)

Very cool stuff FF17. I have been fishing for pike eversince I started fishing here in Ontario. they are my primary target. the very first lesson I learned was a very painful one as well and also with gloves. I would also like to point out that pike has multi-layered teeth and majority of it is pointing inwards....
as an oldertimer told me once. you may have the sharpest hook but it's 1 vs. 100 (for pike). recommended net is collapsible landing net for bigger pike.

Thanks DILLIGAF, they are my primary target too and I can't wait to get after them. I've been fishing for a number of years but really started taking pike fishing seriously these last couple summers when I learned how to track and target them. Still learning as I go but man it is so much fun to catch pike..goal for this year is to nail proper fish handling, regardless of size (and teeth )

No problem Pump. I saw in one of your threads you mentioned that you were nervous of their teeth and I think my story gives you good reason to be!

btw you caught some great pike before the season closed. Will you continue to chase them down when season opens up again?

I know right? Pike are awesome to hunt. I do most of mine spot fishing. I love when they stalk your lure. I always feel the rush when they slowly close in on a jerk bait.

The follow is the best part :)

I had a bad experience already when I stuck my hand in a bass' mouth full of trebles... I don't want that to ever happen again.

I feel like I'm getting used to pike fishing now minus the handling part. I never had any success for them before but now I feel some what confident.

pump your videos are awesome and your passion for the hobby is good. You will only get better with pike fishing. And since you have a nice accessible spot to fish for them. it will only make you a better pike angler. I want to try fly fishing for pike or paddle board fishing for them.

I love the spring pike fish when you can go around the shores and see the monsters just sitting in the sun. For me nothing beats watching a slow retrieve top water get smashed by a huge pike. Simply the best!
