Pike tips?

Yes if you got with a heavy pound test I have stopped using leaders except when using a minnow I use 20 pound fluorocarbon. Last year I got 12 pike this year I have 48. Most have been caught using xraps .

Truthfully I think Pike will eat almost anything I have even caught them on bacon cat fishing.

This guy (Just met him, he's from Hungary) shared some tips and seems to have the whole thing "Dialed In quite nicely"



He mentioned he had 5 follows - 1 landed. (His first cast of the day)
Deeper water, where some of the BIG TOURIST Boats sit.
 
LOL! After I left yesterday, I saw him fishing on the outside marina wall at the music garden marina, but renta-a-cop was trying to tell him it was private, I directed him up past Little norway to where you were.... looks like he got there ok!!

People have mixed results, some report break-offs and some say they've never had any problems using a regular fluoro leader. My take is it depends how the pike is hooked, of course a deep-hooked pike is going to cut the line because the line will constantly be rubbing its mouth. On the contrary, a pike hooked in the side of the mouth won't be scraping the line.

I always use a wire leader, I'd hate to lose both my lure and a fish =( lol
 
EDIT: just wanted to add that, if you have yet to see a pike up close, they have immensely sharp teeth. Don't dare put your hand in their mouth hahaah ;-). Also be wary of their sharp gill rakers, keep those fingers really snug on the inside of the gill covers to avoid bodily damages. =D Long pliers are a MUST.

I have not used a Wire leader for Pike over the past 15 years.
So far, knock on wood ..... Not ONE LOST to this!


I use a snap leader (1" to change up lures quickly - instead of retie everytime)

Considering that 99% of the time, a lure will be on the OUTSIDE of the pikes mouth .... no need to worry.

If you are STATIC BAIT FISHING ... thats a bit of a different story. The pike may deep inhale the offering, thus causing more of a chance for line break.


Either way .... if you do use a wire leader: 4"-6" is all you would ever need.

I met somebody down at Ontario Place today and they said... well this time of year at least... pike wont' bike with a hefty leader. So from that, and what Blair just said, I'm going to be using just a simple snap-swivel. I mentioned this in my report here or here.
 
One thing I'm eager to try is using circle hooks with fluorocarbon leader for pike this spring. I'm hoping that will increase the number of times I hook their lips instead of deeper, which should make it so there are fewer teeth to rub against when the pike swings its head.

Pike are preditors like wolves.Weed edges, stumps, rocks, current breaks, any where a pike can lay in ambush, is where you will get them.Even in deep water where they can come up from below for a meal.I have even caught them on perch i was reeling in, while perch fishing.He grabbed it and slammed it into the bottom before eating it.
My buddy caught this tank in 35 feet of water on a jigging rap, while fishing walleye. It was caught on 4lb ice mono.No leader:D
Needless to say, the Walleye bite stopped right there. I wonder why????

I have caught more large Northern on red devil spoons than anything else. I used to use leaders but last summer I switched to a Fireline product without leaders and caught a ton of NP without incident including this fella:

A few stick baits like the Rapala Flat Rap (I really like the firetiger one) and the Rapala X-rap (I prefer the solid white) Work deadly on shallow pike, 0-6 FOW.

Walk the dog style baits also produce big pike for me. I forget the name of the one I've had alot of success with? I think it's a Rapala Sub walk, in Red/Chartruesse.

The past 2 years I've also done really well fishing some texas rigged plastics like the Berkley Crazy Legs Chigger Craw (I like the black/red fleck).

Swim baits are another great option when you know bigger fish are active.

Black or plain white spinner baits almost always work.

One thing to ermember when fishing pike is don't be afraid to fish really shallow water. Cast shorelines and you''ll most likely find active pike, even the big girls will be in less than 2 FOW.

And when you find structure, look for ambush points, pike love ambush points!
 
trying to get up to canal lake/mitchell lake next week for my birthday, and of course, still looking for the long lost PIKE :p anyone know if the ice is off and what to expect in terms of fishing? i'll also be bringing a set up for pan fish just in case :)

couchiching has some huge gators in it...im sure you will be looking at ice. mitchell is supposed to be really good for muskie.
