Port Hope Says Enough is Enough

I like the idea of volunteers in uniform if the MNR can't get enough manpower out to supervise the situation. I'd also advocate for mandatory education, maybe an on-line course, as a pre-requisite to getting a fishing license with a specific tutorial on ethical salmon fishing. Perhaps this might be in the form of a Port Hope specific municipal license and the extra income used to hire more conservation officers. I would also support an exclusive catch and release fishery or at least reduced limits with heavy fines for leaving dead fish on scene. I would be OK with artificial only but I don't think it's necessary when you can buy quality roe on-line. I would implore the town of Port Hope not to close the fishery as there are plenty of ethical and responsible anglers out there who enjoy fishing for peace of mind and would feel deflated if the fishery were closed. Much can be done to improve the fishery without shutting it down. Thank you for your consideration.

They are there, theres a new face in the CO scene, and he works undercover, hes been down as late as 11pm on weekends and weekdays

harvested roe vs purchased roe....... seriously??? roe isn't oil or diamonds. a salmon dies when she drops here eggs, period. there is blood on all the salmon roe that is harvested.

No...this needs action....it has been for years....if we keep this issue die, it's going to be an endless cycle. it needs to stop. it will just keep getting worst in the future years.

i just thought of something. with the town now stepping in and closing that section of the river, the worse that anyone could be charged with is...........trespassing. who thinks that is going to change anything????

I had the pleasure to visit the Ganny before. I live in Windsor, so scenery like that is the Holy Grail. Mind you I did not get to fish. It was mid summer and as the wife is from Cobourg we were on a family visit trip.

However, Im going to play the devils advocate with this issue.

Let your imagination kick on for a minute, and this is where I see us eventually arriving.

Step 1: Every angler is to take a angler's comtetancy course by a licenced provider. Can be doubled ontop of your hunters course.
Step 2: Every Angler is to apply for a License to carry a fishing rod of any kind
Step 3: Any type of fishing rod is to be registered in the name of the Licenced recreational angler's name at the time of purchase, otherwise it would be considered a provincial offence as illegally carrying a fishing rod.
Step 4: You must only fish for and catch the identified fish in which you have applied and received Tags for, any other type of fish other than your approved tag is to be released as soon as possible in the safest manner possible, or is considered to be a provincial offence.
Step 5: Pay the fee's again each year, and have fun.

I guarantee if Im thinking of this, so is MNR.

Do us all a favour and step up. These are OUR waters. If we witness anything unethical, Stand up to it. The more you invite gvmt involvment the less freedom we will have. We are tax payers. We pay to have the right to fish. Dont give it up and stand up for your fellow anglers. The government will not pick sides, they will only make it harder for ALL anglers, not just the unethical ones. They only know to control the masses. We are responsible for our future. WE can handle this issue. STAND UP

Personally I'd pay extra money for the privilege of fishing in a well-supervised and hence more ethical environment, perhaps this would deter looganism too. at least with on-line education there would be no plea of ignorance excuse as one is assumed to have done the course in order to have a license and if fishing with no license adequate penalties already exist. You're missing the point about buying on-line roe, it's about preventing gutted fish everywhere.

yes that is the sarcasm in the post. I don't want that or anything near that. and there also shouldn't be a country club for anglers. my "superhero" point is that don't introduce more regulation. it's nothing to say to someone "hey I don't think you should be doing that". don't be a hero say it once and if they tell you to gfy then hey you tried. there's no need for excess gun wielding Conservation officers on your tax dollar

except that trespassing can be handled by any on duty police officer and makes enforcement much easier to handle, and in turn, any fishing related crimes while said person is trespassing would be reported to the MNR for further fines

This is pretty sad, and glad to hear that the MNR and OPP are stepping up.

Issues like this aren't just isolated to fishing. People take for granted the outdoors, hell sometimes I still take it for granted. In the past couple years we've taking up camping, and becoming more outdoorsey. Personal I find it disgusting what some people do to our waters and natural areas. Littering, destruction, cruelty to wildlife ... and general lack of disregard for others. This isn't to say everyone is a dick, actually I find majority of people pretty respectful.

What I've I come to realize is that I can't fight everyone, it's not possible nor realistic. What is realistic is to work towards creating a culture that respects the outdoors and what it has to offer. Leading by example and not leaving liter at the places we've visited, picking up liter that those have left behind. Educating our youth that they need to be respectful towards wildlife and understand it's importance.

I have 4 kids and I hope that the culture of embracing nature and not destroying it changes so they and their kids can enjoy what we have.
