Being new to this site, this may have been a topic discussed in the past so I apologize if I am re-hashing a past discussion, but I wonder what people think about the pre-spawn bass fishing idea and why we don't allow it in Ontario. I have gone down to New York the last few springs to hook up with some pre-spawn and it has been great. All the reviews and posts on American fishing feeds I have read all seem to think it is ok for the fish (as they don't allow the fishing for the 2 or 3 weeks prior to actual opening season) so I find myself wondering why Ontario does not allow it. I am a catch and release angler (always have been) and I never feel the need to keep what I catch.
Any thoughts, insights, or reasoning as to why we don't allow this in Ontario would be great.

Look forward to your replies.

Cheers,

Welcome stiffbass!! i guess the mnr wants as many fish spawning as possible, so they open up the season after that

Dont know the actual reason but it seems to me that pre-spawn blitz they get south of the border can cause a little stress to the fish and might hurt the yields, even if only by a small margin..

then again bass dont seem to be having any trouble down there either so who knows.. looking forward to a proper answer myself on this from someone who knows better

cuz "the more you know" :)

It'd probably be to hard to regulate and keep track of here. It's hard enough to enforce the current laws with the lack of ministry officers out there in the field already...

I'm guessing it has to do with what Schmogley said. Bass yanked outta the water while they were protecting their nexts allows for predators to raid the eggs and feast. While they are on the nests they are super aggressive and hit anything - there was a video of some guy approaching his dock where a smallie was protecting its nest, thing darted out and smashed his foot - probably why spawn fishing is so good. I'm assuming the MNR wants the bass to spawn in peace and like caddis said, we've got some damn good bass fishing here in Ontario

I can see why maybe opening it in the kawarthas could be harmful, I just wish we could fish them in places like algonquin to get rid of them in those lakes entirely, of coarse then it becomes hard to tell who's targeting bass and who's targeting out of season trout, but surely you could open it up up there after trout opener...
