hi. i'm just a beginner and had a question about lures. last year was my first year fishing and i used a hook with live worms. when i tried to use a lure i kept losing them! i'm sure i tied them correctly because i printed out some instructions and followed them but i must have lost three lures so i stopped using them and went back to worms. is there some trick i'm missing? do i just tie the lure on to the line using that special way to tie them or do i need one of those lines in between the line and the lure? any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks to all who have answered my other questions!

thanks,
liver

Do you know if the lures were lost because the line was breaking or if the knot was slipping?

If the knot was breaking, make sure you lubricate the line before cinching the knot. Not lubricating (spit will do) can cause the line to fray and wear (even if you cannot see it), creating a weak point in the line.

If the knot is slipping, then you did not get enough friction in the knot, or did not cinch it tight enough. I tend to do a pull test after tying knots just to ensure that I am confident in my knot.

If it is neither of these, and the line is breaking, you should check your line for fraying. If the line is old monofilament, you may consider replacing it as it may have deteriorated. When casting, make sure it is not tangled on a rod eye or around teh reel. The sudden stoppage of a lure flying is often enough to snap the line and send the lure flying. What strength (lb test) was the line you were using? Was it strong enough for the lures you were casting?
