Can someone explain to me how fish survive in these small ponds around out neighbourhoods? i've always wondered as for a couple that ive fished, they look like theyre no deeper than 2 -3 ft.
When im thinking about the cold winter that we had in 2007-2008, i can almost assume that the pond was just a huge skating rink with solid ice. since they have nowhere to go, how do these things survive in there?

from my knowledge, if the pond is actually 2-3 feet deep, it will completely freeze over in the winter. It would have to be at least 4 ft deep in order to avoid complete freeze. The ponds that hold fish probably have deeper water in them that you can't see/reach.

Most lakes in central Ontario usually freeze no more than a foot thick, so with three or four feet, it would have a greater concern with oxygen content in the water to survive.
