A question from a noob: How do you tell what you can target? ie: What is in season? How do you know if an area is restricted? What happens if you are fishing a legal spot and are asked to stop fishing?

Go to: http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/LetsFish/Publication/STEL02_163615.html and it will give you all the information about what you can fish, when and where.

Hope that helps.

Get the book from any baitshop, they all have them for free. Also free online if you search Ontario fishing regulations and go to the mnr site.

Next step, what body of water do you want to fish?

Next step, look in the guide and figure out what zone it is in.

Next step, look at the fish you want to target

Next step, look at the seasonal dates for those species

Next step, turn the page and look at the exceptions page, and see if your target body of water has any exceptions to the rules.

Next step, contact your local MNR office if you have any other questions or are having a hard time determining the status of the body of water you wish to target, for a certain species...

The list of local offices is located in the book 2012 Fishing Ontario " recreational Fishing Regulations Summary"

*edit* make sure you purchase a valid license as well, lol, before fishing

AND remeber if the body of water you are fishing is not listed in the book, then the rules for the season must be followed, eg- speed river- not listed in book so if you catch fish that are not in season, you must return them to the water asap!

What happens if you are fishing a legal spot and are asked to stop fishing?

Tell them to get lost.

Fish & Wildlife Act 1997

c) engaging in an activity, for the purpose of interfering, that disturbs or is likely to disturb wildlife or fish.

Notice without authority

(2) A person shall not purport to give notice that entry to premises is prohibited for the purpose of hunting or fishing or that hunting or fishing is prohibited on premises unless the person has authority to give the notice. 1997, c. 41, s. 13.

Wonder what people will say when I throw that at them and continue to fish :) thanks. That is getting printed and stored in my tackle box:)

Where are you fishing and why the heck is anyone telling you to stop?

Also, as mentioned, as long as your legal, if anyone is trying to force you to stop fishing you can call the MNR and report it. put there number right into your cell phone, just in case you need it.

It's good to have anyways just in case to need to report resource abuse

1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667) is the number you can save in your phone for reporting violations!

Are there any regulations for ponds of fishing spots (ponds listed in the Toronto Pond Map) in Toronto?

For each zone, the regulations apply to the entire zone, unless there are exceptions. For example, in zone 16 (that covers Toronto), bass season opens on 4th Sat. in June. That applies to any body of water in this zone. Does not matter if it is a pond, river or lake. If you catch bass before this time or after Nov. 30th, it should be released immediately.

Get the book and skim through it. You will find answer to alot of your questions
