Hi all,

Just a quick question since I am still new to this and still have a lot to learn.
I noticed that some people walks by a pool and looks at it, then walks away. Also, I noticed that some people sit at a pool where they see one or two steelhead swimming around.

My question is, if you can't see them, does it mean they're not there? I always tought that steelheads are harder to spot in the water than salmon. For bigger and deeper pools even if the water is clear its hard to see all the way to the bottom. So I guess assuming they're not there would be a bad assumption. But if the pool was only a few feet deep with clear water (if I can see the bottom clearly) and see nothing, can I assume they're not there?

Thanks for the tips!

They have "X-RAY Vision" or "Phycic Feelings" *SMILES*

Also, I noticed that some people sit at a pool where they see one or two steelhead swimming around.

They are "Keeping Low" so that the Rainbows dont see them (Spook em out) Sometimes, you actually have to sit WITHOUT MOVEMENT for 10 mins. Fish have sensors that detect sound, pressure. - Course under some conditions, you could have a 3 ring Circus and they would still hit.

My question is, if you can't see them, does it mean they're not there?

NO .... never hurts to double checkI Work the water and if after SEVERAL DRIFTS, move on (if the option is available)

Repeat of question #3

Thanks for the tips!

Quick response! Wow!

Thanks, so even if the water is only around 2-3 feet and I can see the bottom of the empty creek clearly, they could still be there? Hm... I guess I should work the whole creek even harder next time. :-D

*SMILES* Danny, to a point.
If there is ANY COVER, or you cant see the other bank 100%, youd be amazed at how tight the bows hold to the sides.

If you've got like 99% "clearance" then move on.

Honestly, 80% of the time - I NEVER SEE the BOWS, I feel them hit! (NO BS)

______________

A lot of guys will try to go the "Easy Route" and strickly SIGHT FISH, and ... you know I dont blame em. I love to sight fish.
HOWEVER, 50%-60% of the time, thats not an option.

So all I'm suggesting is get USED to READING the Water and Trying different things.
In the Long run ... you will be much better off for it.

Again, we all hit our special Pools etc, but working the water is also SUPER IMPORTANT.
Many Guys wont go out on "Cloudy Water Days"... only go when its GIN CLEAR.

I (and MANY OTHERS) have found that the BITE can be 100x better, under these conditions.

Just my thoughts.

PS: I'm up late anyway, stayed home today and did HouseWork... so I'm jonesing to live Vicariously through others

That part I understand, but I was referring to this small 2-3ft pool in the middle of the creek with no cover. Thanks Blair! I promise I will stop bugging you so much as soon as i get the hang of this type of fishing :D haha

I have fun WHILE getting skunked so it all works out, right? happy fishing!

Rainbows are greedy if a pool or run is well rested the fish in it should hit within 5 drifts if not then i usually will move on .... clear water or heavy pressure can put this number up to 15 drifts. Dont get bogged down on a spot though even if you can see fish but they dont bite keep searching for active pods... you can always come back too area and work drifferent presentations under different conditions( sun angle, moonrise, last light ect)

I believe that Steelhead have an amazing ability to blend in to the background and not be able to see them even in clear water situations.

I agree. They are not INVISIBLE... but, amazing how well they can be concealed.

Thanks for the tips everybody!

Blair, I can't help but feel that your recent post regarding you're night fishing was information directed to me, haha that was some good information!

Nope, too be very honest with you .... it's what I call "Looking in the Mirror"
A good 80% of the info I post is for me!

We tend to forget more than we know, so when I take the time to look up things and post, it helps my own memory.
Plus, nice to have a record of threads to refer back to.

The other 20% of the time, I'm not being selfish.

Haha awesome post though! Lots of great information that answered a few questions I previously posted! (about night fishing and visibility)

Thanks!
