With the warming temps, the river had started to open up this week. Of course this had me waiting anxiously to get out for my first softwater shore fish of 2012. So I did some exploring this past week, looking for promising pike habitat that I figured would be fishable by the weekend.

I had to trek about 3/4km through the bush and snow, and it was quite the chore with all my gear, especially rods. But I made it to a creek mouth and set up shop by about 930am. Weather was already mild, almost zero wind and about plus6. Water temps are still hovering around 31 degrees farenheit.

My first few cast I felt pretty rusty, lol. But it didn't take but a few minutes to get re-acquainted with my tools. Started casting big husky jerks, retrieving them super slow, with just a small jerk in between long pauses. It didn't take long to feel a good hit! Woot woot! A small fish, but a fish noentheless. about 25"

For the next hour, I caught small pike on about 4-5 casts. Lots of action.

Then it slowed down and I decided to try some other baits. After about 4 other baits and no takers, I decided to switch to a X-rap, minnow pattern. Good call too, the action picked right back up. Basically fished it the same as the husky jerk, really slow, with an occasional twitch. Caught 4-or 5 more on the x-rap, but all around 20-25".

The fishing got tough, I had to wait a few minutes here and there as ice chunks floated by, seemingly taking forever.

A few more small fish came on jigs with live bait, then it was time to call it a day.

No size to any of the fish, so no pics, sorry... All fish were released, and the area I fished was 2-4 FOW with mud/sand bottom. No structure at all. Pike are just cruising the flats.

But I had a blast, and it felt soooo good to be back out fishing.

I think I'll head back out tomorrow, if possible

Awesome report Manitou! loved the detailed report on the presentations. Good to hear your exploring paid off. =D

Great read there bud!! Did yeah get any pics???

Unfortunately, no. I'd rather not take pics unless it's really something worth a photo.

I used to take pics of everything, lol, now I have tens of thousands of pics. Nowadays, It's reserved for really good fish, for the most part. Or fishing with my kids, trying to capture memories.

I'm going out again tomorrow though. I'll take pics of any pike over 35", just for you guys, lol.

Thanks for the props guys, I'm still on cloud nine. Such a great feeling to be out fishing again on softwater!

Fair enough that makes plenty of sense!! Hope you have good luck today, and hopefully there'll be some photo's of +35" haha.

I'm gonna try this afternoon. See if the big fish are more active or not.

Yesterday I could see some around 35-40" in the shallows, but they were'nt even moving. Just sun bathing. You could drag bait right in front of them and they were having none of it.

All the smaller fish were super active though.

Stupid Pike!! Take the freaking bait already!!! haha

lol, I wish it was that easy!

I'm heading to a more kid friendly spot in about 15 minutes. I'll take some pics cause 2 of my boys are coming with to scratch their itch as well!

One of my boys gotta new reel for xmas and hes amped to get out and try it!

The spot today is a little deeper and has some current flowing through. It's prime sucker habitat, so I'm hoping pike are there laying in wait for the suckers to spawn.

I could be dead wrong though? Haha, we'll see

Well, nothing good to report. Guess my hunch was wrong, lol.

We fished 4 different spots, they all had some good structure, but nothing would produce.

It was alot of fun though, and I bet these spots will hold fish in about a month.

We fished the train bridge area of Fort Frances first. Found some shallow rock and current seams. On the other side we found a rock drop off to about ten FOW, with some current break, and off the other point was a shallow mud bay full of boulders and trees. This spot looked really promising, but no luck. I fished pretty fast though, and changed up lures often. The water temps were again 31 degrees, but the water was gin clear. It was sunny with a 15km/h wind from the south.

The next spot we hit was a dock in central Fort Frances. There was no structure at all, other than the dock. Tried a few casts, and quickly packed up to leave.

We were just about out of town, and I remembered an old spot I fished as a kid one time. Though what the heck, lets go check it out and see if it's clear of ice. We walked down the hill to get there, took about 10 minutes to find the spot. It looks really nice actually, and had a small creek right there. It was pretty shallow, but had some nice current seems and boulders in the water. We had no luck there either, but I will def. go back later to look for bass. It was a gorgeous looking bass spot, especially if the water goes up abit.
