Recommend Some Good Muskie Setups

Yea your info is all great and all but some people just cannot afford to go for the set ups your talking about and I know for a fact that people can spend 200 dollars on a set up and land them just fine. I have witnessed a child and his father with an ugly stick and 15 lbs braid land a 45+ inch muskie. If Bow Man is serious about getting some muskie fishing in this season then he is perfectly fine with a set up like I said. I do believe in spending money to get the good stuff but spending money on a legend rod would KILL the bank account for most people. Buying a tranx reel will cost 600 bucks lol. Your advice on going cheap is right in most aspects but at the same time a shimano cardiff is not cheap and maybe for Bow Man he doesn't need to go too heavy just yet.

The info he gave is helpful, but i would not spend that kind of cash on gear i will only use a few times a year. I would spend that kind of cash on bass gear which i use ALOT. But back to muskie i think i will be heading up to BP next week there is not much in the way of HEAVY gear in my area. Also have come to the conclusion that i will throw my hat in the baitcaster ring.

My target that time was Bass, It just happen that there is Muskie around. As much as I like to use different rods for catching different fish, I think it's not worth doing .... I only have two hands .... before I can get my hand to the other rods the fish is gone far gone. It takes more time to cast a longer Rod than a shorter one but you can cast farther ... plus 2 feet, 3 feet, 5 feet etc. plus wind factors plus weight of lure plus your height, baits and depends on type of line you're using too, as line becomes thicker = shorter casting distance

I actually fish the upper for muskie. Was there last weekend and caught one ( smaller 30-34 inch probably 15 pouinds ). Plus 4 really nice small mouths. This weekend is probably scrap for me i have to do some target practice for a archery shoot in a couple weeks. But thanks maybe some other time.

There are cheaper options I can recommend but like I stated earlier you are better off spending your money once rather then twice. If you had to choose between a better quality rod vs a better quality reel I would choose the reel.

The Okuma EVX musky series rods have many options costing around or under $150. They have any type of musky rod you would want.

The Bass Pro Shops Graphite series 7'6 Extra heavy Rod will do for $50 and it can handle small to medium sized baits

There is also a Browning Medallion Series 7'6" which is just under $100.

I would consider these rods to be decent low end rods but they will do the trick.

As for lower end reels.....I wouldn't buy any of them.

The Diawa Lexa is a decent smaller sized musky reel for just under $200 and It is built to handle heavier baits and large fish. For a few bucks more it is worth it.

Sitting somewhere in my garage is a nice old Fenwick one piece glass musky rod, used a half dozen times maybe. Penn 209 or 309 levelwind reel more of a trolling reel but I can throw it pretty well as a baitcaster. Would this be suitable Nick?

The Fenwick glass rod would make a good trolling rod...but it wouldn't be suitable for casting, it's too soft. Same with the reel, good for trolling but I wouldn't recommend it for casting.

Sorry forgot to mention it's a 6' rod more of a pool cue than soft, was their top of the line back in the day.

Looking to put together a muskie setup. So give me some recommendations on rods reels line etc.....

Looking to spend 200.00-250.00 but could go higher.

If you don't mind a bit of a drive and want to check out a Tackle Shop where they make most of their money on Musky Lures Rods and Reels check the guys out in the video they tell you their name and where they are at the end of the video.
I know one guy who drove there and said for Musky Lures it was worth the drive as they had everything and then some plus they really know their stuff there.
