red is only visible to a certain depth, after that, they blend in with the rest of the environment and turn darkish/blueish.
this was first noted in marine fish. many people wondered why they ahve these gorgeous colours that are so pleasant on the eyes and so attractive. wouldn't they ultimately get the attention of predators? they did the studies and showed that bright colours like red disappear in deeper waters!

also, bleeding fish is a complete joke to me as well. as we've all noticed, in water, if there is a bleeding fish, you will only notice it if the fish still, and there is no current. you can see how fast the blood diffuses into the water and disappears. especially on smaller fish (lure sized) you never even really see the blood in teh water, it just gets into the water and disperses quickly. In my experience, only pike seem to have blood that clots quickly and is visisble in the water.

I guess this is the idea behind red color mono and braided line for deeper water applications the red color blends in with the environment quickly at the higher depths.... I guess we will see this season I have one reel spooled with the red power pro....

are red hooks effective? i recently found some red rust paint & painted all my hooks red.
red hooks are deadly for salmon.i was guy using just red hook and catching big salmon in the creek in fall.

You can use any hooks to catch salmon in the creeks. The technique is called "lining".

Red hooks may change colour at certain depths..this may be true, but most red hooks on lures I see are for the most part 0-15 fow depth. SO. do they work on top water and shallow running lures?

Are you saying I should replace all of my spoons with red hook? when casting from river mouth during fall for salmon?

The colour red is the first to disappear underwater.
Depending on the water clarity, red will just appear to be black somewhere between 5 and about 12 feet down.
Red hooks, tabs, paint-jobs etc. might help to catch fish in shallow water, but mainly they catch fishermen...GRIN.
Just for the record, I buy red 3/0 hooks from BPS, I like the thin wire and they seem to be more rust resistant.

I tend to agree, its more or less for looks & shallow water applications, but I've had debates with other people, on red of as a trigger, it would usually lead into a whole other debate on color spectrum, and how bass view colors differently than we do (i had a little graphic saved somewhere), my opinion on the subject was that, sure lets say that the color of blood to a bass looks like a shade of purple, I still think they can tell its blood coming out of a injured fish/minnow even tho the color is different.

Now whether "red hooks" add benefits to a overall pattern of a lure is another debate too, I used to believe the opposite, that most of these patterns on all these lures were more or less to attract fishermen rather than fish. But after doing some experimenting... and hours of fishing, I've come to the conclusion that certain fish especially (pike & muskie and sometimes bass) have colors preferences.. sure, on good days it might not even make a diff, if the fish are hitting everything anyways, but on those more challenging outings, in my experiance, the color patterns definetly come into play. If you're not using the right lures or hot patterns for that waterbody, you might aswell pack-up & leave. Great example of this, was when I going topwater at a pond, the fish weren't hitting any of my other pop-r's, except for my small rapala skitter pop (Leopard frog) pattern, that told me that they actually paying close attention to what I was presenting them. I'm curious to hear other peoples experiances with this.

Hey all,

When it comes to the ability of fish to see specific colours, it is species specific. Check out the following link http://www.tacklemaking.com/default.php?pageID=12. In particular, read the section entitled, "Choosing Colours That Catch Fish". The article also goes on to talk about water colour and clarity.

I would think that colours definitely make a difference when catching fish, but how much of a difference will depend on species, depth, presentation. Is your lure more of a reaction type of bait? Then colour may not be as important as when you are dead-sticking. We all know that a number of factors go into a lure being effective, including application.

Can it hurt to have the red hooks? Probably not, especially if they disappear after 15'. Can it help you catch more fish? Probably not beyond 15' deep. Are they any better or worse than the standard hooks? I don't know. Do I use red hooks? Yes. I think they are pretty and give me a touch more confidence in the lures I make since I like to fish shallower waters.

The important thing is that it gives me that little bit more confidence in the lure I am fishing. That is one of the most important things to me.

Your mileage may vary.
