Hey guys , im looking to purchase a canoe off kijiji, I got a car topper kit but havnt really done this before. Do I need the tie her down. With the rope or could I get away with just the straps. I dont wanna purhase it . Then see it in the middle of the road in my rearview. Any tips would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Yes you need to tie it down. Either rope or straps will work You should tie down the front and rear to a point down around the bumper/frame area in 'V' pattern and at least one tie down around the belly of the canoe to keep it snug to the roof. Lots of good You Tube videos on how to do it.

+1...don't depend on the straps. tying down both ends is making it more safe for you and for other commuters.

Totally agree ! While transporting a Jon boat we saw it slide off the roof, because we neglected to tie down the ends. Luckily it slid off the road so it didn't cause an accident and we had learned a valuable lesson. Make sure it is tied front , back and in the middle as suggested.

So guys I finally picked up a beaut of a canoe. Paid like 350 for oars brand new jackets and the canoe. Just another dumb question could I skip out ob tieing the ends and just use rachet straps for everything ? Like the front ,back and across the top? I really just dont trust my knots, besides tying a hook lol

Strap it down and tie off the ends. Vibrations, stop and go can loosen the straps or shift the canoe on the roof. I usually check the canoe 15 minutes after driving to make sure everything is proper. Short drives between fishin' holes I'll just strap her down to the roof without securing the ends to my car - never lost a canoe but it has shifted position on my roof this way. Dont be lazy - I have heard of roof racks failing. I also like to twist the strap a bit so it doesnt vibrate and give me a headache at high speeds

Most of the canoes I see are tied from the stern to a point or 2 at the rear bumper. This arrangement depends on friction to restrain the canoe if you hit the brakes suddenly. It's better to tie to the rear seat or some other point forward from the stern. The object is to have the tie point on the canoe further ahead than the rear bumper. That way the tension in the rope will restrain the canoe from lurching forward.

BTW--if you are talking to a canoeist don't use the term 'oars'!  They are called paddles!

Ratchet straps have always worked for me, for canoes, kayaks, and many other things.

My side bars are secured to my roof with two bolts at each end. One of those ends came apart once, so both bolts became loose. It still held for the rest of the drive, and I fixed it afterwards and haven't had that happen again. Just avoid extreme over tightening. Give the canoe a few solid jerks to make sure it's snug. It really depends on the design of your roof rack, roof, and canoe, how you will end up strapping it. It's a good idea to stop periodically and check on it for long drives.

hey guys any idea on how i can fix this up? after further inspection looks like i got some work to do to get her ready for bass opener!

Hmmm... I've had a few in me but one things for sure is to get those rusties outta there. I'm assuming the rope is holding up the wooden seat where the bracket cracked? An option could be get a bracket made and shift the seat back an inch? Nice ties of the rope to the hex screws
