Rod & Reel HELP PLESE.(I don't know what I'm doing) :)

Hello everyone…I’m hoping some of you fishing experts here and help me select a really nice REEL and ROD. My brother’s birthday is next month and I would really love to surprise him with a new rod and reel as he loves to fish. I know my brother has a few rods and reels…and knowing him they are pretty good ones… but maybe with some help (because I know nothing about fishing :wink: ) I can find him something that he would really LOVE.
Anyone with suggestions on the BEST reel and rod…would be great. He fishes in Lake Scugog for the most part… Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Perch, Walleye, Pickerel.

Generally an experienced fisheman would like a gift card to choose what he would like to have vs having to return somethng and exchange it. It may not be as personal but more practical. I usually ask for gift card for Bass Pro for my BDay, as my needs change from season to season and I need to stock up on different supplies at different times.

Choosing a proper set up for an experienced fisheman can be very overwhelming, best to let them decide. Hope this helps, and good luck.

I completely agree, my parents bought me a fishing rod for Christmas and it wasn't heavy enough, so I asked them if it was alright to exchange it for another one.
They said it was fine, but I can't help but feel like I offended them. Gift card is a good idea.

If purchasing for an experienced angler who already has a number of rods, then I would agree with the others here since what your brother would appreciate would depend on what he already has. For many anglers, rod and reel combos are like golf clubs - each one is for a different application. As a result, without knowing what your brother has will make it impossible for us to even guess as to what would be 'good' for him.

Then there are the politics of brand loyalty...

BPS gift card would be the way to go...

I just want to do something special for him...or try to and fishing seems to be his thing...along with hockey. I have no idea what he has already...
I'd like to just purchase a nice set for him...and if he wishes to exchange it, that would be fine with me.
I have a budget of $400. I have no idea how much they cost...but surely I can find something in that price range? Any thoughts?

If he already has the gear, why not send him out with a fishing guide. Could be a lake out of the city for bass fishing or on a charter boat for some Lake O salmon. Either way, it's within your budget and I'm sure he'd have an awesome time (if he already hasn't done so). Good luck!

Any idea of what species of fish he most avidly persues? Rather than a rod/reel combo he might apreciate $400 worth of lures that are favorite of guys here that much more....

Hi Amelia,
I don't know what's up your way - Midland/Barrie area. Not really familiar with the shops up there. You could drive down into the city to one of the larger outfitters - Bass Pro or Le Baron. Le Baron's prices might be better.
I'll try - Here's a really nice reel, Shimano Stradic. The 2500 is a good size, line capacity is reasonable and would probably be a nice addition to his collection if he doesn't already have one. Bass Pro has combo online, priced around $300 but I don't know much about the rod that's matched up with it.

The list on the link gives you a selection of several sizes and lengths. I suggest 38-952-110-04, but anyone really would do, as he could easily exchange to his personal preference. In any case, it would be a very nice gift. It is a 1 piece 7' rod, so be prepared for that, especially if you're driving a small car.
